7. [al-Araf, Mecca 39]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

تِلْكَ الْقُرَى نَقُصُّ عَلَيْكَ مِنْ أَنبَآئِهَا...

7: 101. Such were the towns whose story We (thus) relate unto thee:

there came indeed to them their Messengers with clear (signs): but they would not believe what they had rejected before.

C1070. Those who have heard the Message and rejected it find it more difficult afterwards to retrace their steps. Evil has blocked the channels of Allah's grace to them. It begins with their breaking their Covenant with Allah; with each step afterwards they fall deeper and deeper into the mire.

Thus doth Allah seal up the heart of those who reject faith.

7: 102. Most of them We found not men (true) to their covenant:

but most of them We found rebellious and disobedient.

7: 103. Then after them We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs,

but they wrongfully rejected them:

so see what was the end of those who made mischief.

Pickthall’s Version:

7: 100

Pickthall Is it not an indication to those who inherit the land after its people (who thus reaped the consequence of evil doing) that, if We will, We can smite them for their sins and print upon their hearts so that they hear not?

Transliteration Awa lam yahdi lillazina yarisu_nal arda mim ba'di ahliha_ allau nasya_'u asabna_hum bi zunu_bihim, wa natba'u 'ala_ qulu_bihim fahum la_ yasma'u_n(a).

7: 101

Pickthall Such were the townships. We relate some tidings of them unto thee (Muhammad). Their messengers verily came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they could not believe because they had before denied. Thus doth Allah print upon the hearts of disbelievers (that they hear not).

Transliteration Tilkal qura_ naqussu 'alaika min amba_iha_, wa laqad ja_'athum rusuluhum bil bayyina_t(i), fama_ ka_nu_ liyu'minu_ bima_ kazzabu_ min qabl(u), kaza_lika yatba'ulla_hu 'ala_ qulu_bil ka_firin(a).

7: 102

Asad and in most of them We found no [inner] bond with anything that is right [note 83] – and most of them We found to be iniquitous indeed.

Pickthall We found no (loyalty to any) covenant in most of them. Nay, most of them We found wrong-doers.

Transliteration Wama_ wajadna_ li aksarihim min 'ahd(in), wa iw wajadna_ aksarahum lafa_siqin(a).

[[ Asad’s note 83 - Thus Raghib explains the term ‘ahd’ occurring in this sentence. its usual rendering as “covenant” or “loyalty to their covenant” is entirely meaningless in this context. …..in the above term man’s instinctive ability to discern between right and wrong and, thus, to follow the dictates of his own conscience (Manar lX, 33 ff.). Regarding the deeper implications of this expression, see surah 2, note 19.]

[[ Alis notes - 1069 The stories which have been related should give a warning to present and future generations which have inherited the land, the power, or the experience of the past. They should know that if they fall into the same sins they will meet with the same fate: when through their contumacy their hearts are hardened, they do not listen to the advice that falls on their ears. (7.100)

1070 Those who have heard the Message and rejected it find it more difficult afterwards to retrace their steps. Evil has blocked the channels of Allah's grace to them. It begins with their breaking their Covenant with Allah; with each step afterwards they fall deeper and deeper into the mire. (7.101)]]

=====================================

10. [Yunus, Mecca 51]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَا الْقُرُونَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَمَّا ظَلَمُواْ...

10: 13.  Generations before you We destroyed when they did wrong:

their Messengers came to them with Clear Signs, but they would not believe!

Thus do We requite those who sin!

10: 95.  Nor be of those who reject the Signs of Allah, or thou shalt be of those who perish.

10: 96.  Those against whom the Word of thy Lord hath been verified would not believe --

C1477. Allah has given frequent warnings against Evil and want of Faith in all ages, through Signs and through inspiration, -the latter "the Word" being even more direct and personal than the former.

Those who did not heed the warning found to their cost that it was true, and they perished. Such contumacy in the rejection of Truth only yields when the actual penalty is in sight. Belief then is induced by irresistible facts: it is not efficacious as Faith, as was proved against Pharaoh, See 10:90 and n. 1473.

10: 97.  Even if every Sign was brought unto them -- until they see (for themselves) the Penalty Grievous.

Others version:

10: 13

Pickthall We destroyed the generations before you when they did wrong; and their messengers (from Allah) came unto them with clear proofs (of His Sovereignty) but they would not believe. Thus do We reward the guilty folk:

Transliteration Wa laqad ahlaknal quru_na min qablikum lamma_ zalamu_, wa ja_'athum rusuluhum bil bayyina_ti wa ma_ ka_nu_ liyu'minu_, kaza_lika najzil qaumal mujrimin(a).

10: 95

Asad and neither be among those who are bent on giving the lie to God’s messages, lest you find yourself among the lost.

Pickthall And be not thou of those who deny the revelations of Allah, for then wert thou of the losers.

Yuksel Do not be of those who denied God's signs, for you will be of the losers.

Transliteration Wa la_ taku_nanna minal lazina kazzabu_ bi a_ya_tilla_hi fa taku_na minal kha_sirin(a).

10: 96 Asad Verily, they against whom thy Sustainer’s word [of judgment] has come true [note 117] will not attain to faith -

Pickthall Lo! those for whom the word of thy Lord (concerning sinners) hath effect will not believe,

Yuksel Those who have deserved your Lord's retribution do not acknowledge,

Transliteration Innal lazina haqqat 'alaihim kalimatu rabbika la_ yu'minu_n(a).

[[ Asad’s note 117 – See verse 33 and note 53 above; also note 4 on 14:4 –

note 53 See surah 2, note 7, as well as 8:55 and the corresponding note 58. In this particular context, “the Sustainer’s word” seems to be synonymous with “the way of God” (sunnat Allah) concerning deliberate sinners and deniers of the truth (Manar XI, 359). The particle ‘anna in annahum’( lit., “that they”) is, thus, indicative of the purposrt of the divine “word” referred to, and is best expressed by a colon.]]

10: 97

Pickthall Though every token come unto them, till they see the painful doom.

Yuksel Even if every sign were to come to them; until they see the painful retribution

Transliteration Wa lau ja_'athum kullu a_yatin hatta_ yarawul 'aza_bal alim(a).
