6. Sura al-Anam
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
وَإِن
تُطِعْ
أَكْثَرَ
مَن
فِي
الأَرْضِ
يُضِلُّوكَ
عَن
سَبِيلِ
اللّهِ...
6: 116. Wert thou to follow the common run of those on earth, they will lead thee away from the Way of Allah.
...إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلاَّ الظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلاَّ يَخْرُصُونَ ﴿١١٦﴾
They follow nothing but conjecture:
they do nothing but lie.
فَكُلُواْ
مِمَّا
ذُكِرَ
اسْمُ
اللّهِ
عَلَيْهِ
إِن
كُنتُمْ
بِآيَاتِهِ
مُؤْمِنِينَ
﴿١١٨﴾
6: 118. So eat of (meats) on which Allah's name hath been pronounced, if ye have faith in His Signs.
Asad’s Version:
6: 116 Now if you pay heed unto the majority of those on earth, they will but lead you astray from the path of God they follow but conjectures, and they themselves do nothing but guess. Asad
6: 118 Eat, then, of that over which God’s name has been pronounced, if you truly believe in His messages. 6: 119 and why should you not eat of that over which God’s name has been pronounced, seeing that He has so clearly spelled out to you He has forbidden you unless you are compelled [to do so] ? But, behold, many people lead other astray by their own errant views, without knowledge.
Verily, your Sustainer is fully aware of those who transgress the bounds of what is right.
Ayah 36
Asad ……..behold, conjecture can never be a substitute for truth. Verily, God has full knowledge of all that they do.
Yusuf Ali But most of them follow nothing but fancy: truly fancy can be of no avail against Truth. Verily Allah is well aware of all that they do.
Pickthall Most of them follow naught but conjecture. Assuredly conjecture can by no means take the place of truth. Lo! Allah is Aware of what they do.
Transliteration Wa ma_ yattabi'u aksaruhum illa_ zanna_(n), innaz zanna la_ yugni minal haqqi syai'a_(n), innalla_ha 'alimum bima_ yaf'alu_n(a).

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
وَلاَ
تَقْفُ مَا
لَيْسَ لَكَ
بِهِ عِلْمٌ...
17: 36. And pursue not that of which thou hast no knowledge;
C2222. Idle curiosity may lead us to nose into evil, through our ignorance that it is evil. We must guard against every such danger.
We must only hear the things that are known to us to be of good report, and see things that are good and instructive and entertain in our hearts feelings or in our minds ideas that we have reason to expect will be spiritually profitable to us. We shall be called to account for the exercise of every faculty that has been given to us.
This goes a little farther than a famous sculpture on a Japanese temple in which three monkeys are shown as putting their hands to their ears, eyes, and mouths, respectively, to show that they were not prepared to hear any evil, or see any evil, or speak any evil.
Here idle curiosity is condemned. Futility is to be avoided even if it does not reach the degree of positive evil.
...إِنَّ السَّمْعَ وَالْبَصَرَ وَالْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُولـئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْؤُولاً ﴿٣٦﴾
for every act of hearing, or of seeing, or of (feeling in) the heart will be enquired into (on the Day of Reckoning).
Pickthall’s Version:
17: 36
Pickthall (O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart--of each of these it will be asked.
Transliteration Wa la_ taqfu ma_ laisa laka bihi 'ilm(un), innas sam'a wal basara wal fu'a_da kullu ula_'ika ka_na 'anhu mas'u_la_(n).
