21. [al-anbya, mecca ]
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
ثُمَّ صَدَقْنَاهُمُ الْوَعْدَ فَأَنجَيْنَاهُمْ وَمَن نَّشَاء...
21: 9. In the end We fulfilled to them Our promise, and We saved them and those whom We pleased,
...وَأَهْلَكْنَا الْمُسْرِفِينَ ﴿٩﴾
but We destroyed those who transgressed beyond bounds.
C2672. But, however difficult (or impossible) their mission may have appeared to them, or to the world at first, they won through eventually, even those who seemed to have been defeated. Examples are given in the latter part of this Surah, especially in 21:51-93.
They were delivered from the Wrath which overtook the Unbelievers, as were those with them who accepted Allah's Message and placed themselves in conformity with His Will and Plan.
That is the meaning of "whom We pleased."
Asad’s Version:
21:9
In the end, We made good unto them Our promise, and We saved them and all whom We willed [to save]," and We destroyed those who had wasted their own selves. 12
[[Asad’s notes
12 As regards my rendering of al-musrifun as "those who had wasted their own selves", see note 21
