What God Does NOT LOVE OR LIKE

2. Surah Al Baqarah

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَإِذَا تَوَلَّى سَعَى فِي الأَرْضِ لِيُفْسِدَ فِيِهَا وَيُهْلِكَ الْحَرْثَ وَالنَّسْلَ...

2: 205. When he turns his back, his aim everywhere is to spread mischief through the earth and destroy crops and cattle.

But Allah loveth not mischief.

2: 206. When it is said to him, "Fear Allah," he is led by arrogance to (more) crime.

Enough for him is Hell; an evil bed indeed (to lie on)!

C228. According to the English saying,

"As you have made your bed, so you must lie in it."

Others version:

2: 205

Asad But whenever he prevails, he goes about the earth spreading corruption and destroying [man’s] tilth and progeny [note 189]: and God does not love corruption.

Pickthall And when he turneth away (from thee) his effort in the land is to make mischief therein and to destroy the crops and the cattle; and Allah loveth not mischief.

Transliteration Wa iza_ tawalla_ sa'a_ filardi liyufsida fiha_ wa yuhlikal harsa wan nasl(a), walla_hu la_ yuhibbulfasa_ d(a).

[Asad’s note 189 - …………..As regards the expression ‘harth’ (rendered by me as “tilth”), its primary significance is “gain” or “acquisition” through labor; and thus it often signifies “worldly goods”………….However, some commentators – basing their opinion on the Quranic sentence, “your wives are your tilth” (2:223) – maintain that ‘harth’ stands here for “wives”……………]

2: 206

Asad And whenever he is told, “Be conscious of God,” his false pride drive him into sin: wherever hell will be his allotted portion – and how vile a resting –place!

Yusuf Ali When it is said to him "Fear Allah" he is led by arrogance to (more) crime. Enough for him is Hell; an evil bed indeed (to lie on)!

Pickthall And when it is said unto him: Be careful of thy duty to Allah, pride taketh him to sin. Hell will settle his account, an evil resting place.

Transliteration Wa iza_ qila lahut taqilla_ha akhazathul 'izzatu bil ismi fahasbuhu_ jahannam(u), wa labi'sal miha_d(u).

5. Surah Al-Ma'idah

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَقَالَتِ الْيَهُودُ يَدُ اللّهِ مَغْلُولَةٌ ...

5: 64. The Jews say: "Allah's hand is tied up."

C772. Cf. 5:12. and 2:245, for a "beautiful loan to Allah",

and 3:181, for the blasphemous taunt, "Then Allah is poor!" It is another form of the taunt to say, "Then Allah's hands are tied up. He is close-fisted. He does not give!"

This blasphemy is repudiated. On the contrary, boundless is Allah's bounty, and He gives, as it were, with both hands outstretched,-a figure of speech for unbounded liberality.

Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for the (blasphemy) they utter.

Nay, both His hands are widely outstretched: He giveth and spendeth (of His bounty) as He pleaseth.

But the revelation that cometh to thee from Allah increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy.

C773. Their jealousy-because Al-Mustafa is chosen for Allah's Message-is so great that it only confirms and strengthens their rebellion and blasphemy.

Amongst them We have placed enmity and hatred till the Day of Judgment.

C774. Cf. 5:14. where the eternal warring of the Christian sects, among themselves and against the Jews, is referred to.

The reference is to the whole of the People of the Book, Jews and Christians-their internal squabbles and their external disputes, quarrels, and wars.

Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth.

C775. The argument of the whole verse may be thus stated.

The Jews blaspheme and mock, and because of their jealousy, the more they are taught, the more obstinate they become in their rebellion.

But what good will it do to them?

Their selfishness and spite sow quarrels among themselves, which will not be healed till the Day of Judgment.

When they stir up wars, especially against the innocent. Allah's Mercy is poured down like a flood of water to extinguish them. But their wickedness continues to devise ever new mischief.

And Allah loves not mischief or those who do mischief.

And Allah loveth not those who do mischief.

Others version:

5: 64

Asad ………………But all that has been bestowed from on high upon you [O Prophet] by your Sustainer is bound to make many of them yet more stubborn in their overweening arrogance and in their denial of the truth. And so We have case enmity and hatred among the followers of the Bible [note 82], [to last] until Resurrection Day; every time …………….

Pickthall The Jews say: Allah's hand is fettered. Their hands are fettered and they are accursed for saying so. Nay, but both His hands are spread out wide in bounty. He bestoweth as He will. That which hath been revealed unto thee from thy Lord is certain to increase the contumacy and disbelief of many of them, and We have cast among them enmity and hatred till the Day of Resurrection. As often as they light a fire for war, Allah extinguisheth it. Their effort is for corruption in the land, and Allah loveth not corrupters.

Transliteration Wa qa_latil yahu_du yadulla_hi maglu_lah(tun), gullat aidihim wa lu'inu_ bima_ qa_lu_, bal yada_hu mabsu_tata_n(i), yunfiqu kaifa yasya_'(u), walayazidanna kasiram minhum ma_ unzila ilaika mir rabbika tugya_naw wa kufra_(n), wa alqaina_ bainahumul 'ada_wata wal bagda_'a ila_ yaumil qiya_mah(ti), kullama_ auqadu_ na_ral lil harbi atfa'ahalla_h(u), wa yas'auna fil ardi fasa_da_(n), walla_hu la_ yuhibbul mufsidin(a).

16. Sura al-Nahl

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

لاَ جَرَمَ أَنَّ اللّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ...

16: 23.  Undoubtedly Allah doth know what they conceal, and what they reveal:

C2046. Cf. 16:19, where the same words refer to man generally.

Whether he conceals or reveals what is in his heart, Allah knows it, and as Allah is Oft-Forgiving. Most Merciful, His grace is available as His highest favour if man will take it.

Here the reference is to those who "refuse to know", who reject Allah's guidance out of arrogance. Allah"loveth not the arrogant". Such men deprive themselves of Allah's grace.

verily He loveth not the arrogant.

Others version:

16: 23

Asad Truly, God knows all they keep secret as well as all that they bring into the open – [and,] behold, He does not love those who are given to arrogance,

Pickthall Assuredly Allah knoweth that which they keep hidden and that which they proclaim. Lo! He loveth not the proud.

Transliteration La_ jarama annalla_ha ya'lamu ma_ yusirru_na wa ma_ yu'linu_n(a), innahu_ la_ yuhibbul mustakbirin(a).
