3. Sura al-Imran, Medina 89 [200 verses]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

ذَلِكَ مِنْ أَنبَاء الْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهِ إِلَيكَ ...

3:44. This is part of the tidings of the things unseen, which We reveal unto thee (O Prophet!) by inspiration;

C383. Things unseen: belong to a realm beyond the reach of human perception and therefore it would be unseemly to dispute or speculate about them. (R)

thou wast not with them when they cast lots with arrows,

C384. Literally, reeds: aqalam.

For the Arab custom of casting lots with arrows, see 2:219, n. 241.

as to which of them should be charged with the care of Mary;

nor wast thou with them when they disputed (the point).

C385. Christian apocryphal writings mention the contention between the priests as to the honor of taking charge of Mary, and how it was decided by means of rods or reeds in favour of Zakariya.

Pickthall’s Version:

3: 44).

Pickthall This is of the tidings of things hidden. We reveal it unto thee (Mohammad). Thou wast not present with them when they threw their pens (to know) which of them should be the guardian of Mary, nor wast thou present with them when they quarrelled (thereupon).

Transliteration Za_lika min amba_'il gaibi nu_hihi ilaik(a), wa ma_ kunta ladaihim iz yulqu_na aqla_mahum ayyuhum yakfulu maryam(a), wa ma_ kunta ladaihim iz yakhtasimu_n(a).

13. Ar-R’ad, Medina 96

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

المر...

13: 1.     Alif Lam Mim Ra.

C1798. For Alif, Lam, Mim, see n. 25 to 2:1.

For Alif, Lam, Ra, see Introduction to Surah 10. For abbreviated Letters generally see Appendix 1.

Here there seems to be a combination of the groups Alif, Lam, Mim and Alif, Lam, Ra. We consider here not only the beginning (Alif), the middle (Lam), and the end (Mim), of man's spiritual history, but also the immediate future of the interior of our organization, such as it appeared to our Ummah towards the close of the Makkan period. But in trying to determine their meaning, we must not be dogmatic. The befitting attitude is to say: Allah knows best. (R).

These are the Signs (or Verses) of the Book:

C1799. Cf. 10:1n. 1382.

that which hath been revealed unto thee from thy Lord is the Truth;

but most men believe not.

Pickthall’s Version:

13: 1

.

Pickthall Alif. Lam. Mim. Ra. These are verses of the Scripture. That which is revealed unto thee from thy Lord is the Truth, but most of mankind believe not.

Transliteration Alif La_m Ra_, tilka a_ya_tul kita_b(i), wallazi unzila ilaika mir rabbikal haqqu wa la_kinna aksaran na_si la_ yu'minu_n(a).

16. Sura al-Nahl

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَإِذَا بَدَّلْنَا آيَةً مَّكَانَ آيَةٍ وَاللّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُنَزِّلُ...

16:101. When We substitute one revelation for another, and Allah knows best what He reveals (in stages),

C2140. See 2:106, and n. 107.

The doctrine of progressive revelation from age to age and time to time does not mean that Allah's fundamental Law changes.

It is not fair to charge a Prophet of Allah with forgery because the Message as revealed to him is in a different form from that revealed before, when the core of the Truth is the same, for it comes from Allah.

they say, "Thou art but a forger":

but most of them understand not.

16:102. Say,

the Holy Spirit has brought the revelation from thy Lord in truth,

C2141. The title of the Angel Gabriel, through whom the revelations came down.

in order to strengthen those who believe,

C2142. The People of the Book, if they had true faith, were themselves strengthened in their faith and cleared of their doubts and difficulties by the revelations brought by Al-Mustafa; and all whether People of the Book or not -who came within the fold of Islam, found the Quran a Guide and a Gospel, i.e., a substitute for the Mosaic Law and for the Christian Gospel, which had both been corrupted.

and as a guide and Glad Tidings to Muslims.

Other versions:

16: 101

Pickthall And when We put a revelation in place of (another) revelation,--and Allah knoweth best what He revealeth--they say: Lo! thou art but inventing. Most of them know not.

Yuksel If We exchange a sign in place of another sign; and God is more aware of what He is revealing; they say, "You are making this up!" Alas, most of them do not know.

Transliteration Wa iza_ baddalna_ a_yatam maka_na a_yah(tin), walla_hu a'lamu bima_ yunazzilu qa_lu_ innama_ anta muftar(in), bal aksaruhum la_ ya'lamu_n(a).

16: 102

Pickthall Say: The holy Spirit hath revealed it from thy Lord with truth, that it may confirm (the faith of) those who believe, and as guidance and good tidings for those who have surrendered (to Allah).

Yuksel 16:102 Say, "The Holy Spirit has sent it down from your Lord with truth, so that those who acknowledge will be strengthened, and as a guidance and good news for those who have peacefully surrendered."

17.Surah Al Isra

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَبِالْحَقِّ أَنزَلْنَاهُ وَبِالْحَقِّ نَزَلَ...

17:105. We sent down the (Qur'án) in Truth, and in Truth has it descended:

C2315. The Quran was sent down by Allah in Truth: it was not forged by any mortal.

It has descended in Truth: it was not and has not been falsified or corrupted in the process of being communicated to mankind.

and We sent thee but to give Glad Tidings and to warn (sinners).

C2316. The part of the Prophet was that of a Messenger: he was not responsible if the ungodly rejected it. He fulfilled his mission in promulgating and explaining it and leaving it as a legacy to the world.

17:106. (It is) a Qur'án which We have divided (into parts from time to time), in order that thou mightest recite it to men at intervals:

We have revealed it by stages.

C2317. The marvel is that these parts, revealed at different times and in different circumstances, should fit together so closely and consistently as they do. All revelation is progressive.

The previous revelations were also progressive. Each of them marked a stage in the world's spiritual history.

Man's mind does not take in more than his spiritual state will have prepared him, for Allah's revelation comes as a light to illuminate our difficulties and show us the way in actual situations that arise.

Other versions:

17: 105

: and We sent thee but to give Glad Tidings and to warn (sinners).

Pickthall With truth have We sent it down, and with truth hath it descended. And We have sent thee as naught else save a bearer of good tidings and a warner.

Yuksel 17:105 It is with truth that We have sent it down, and with truth it came down. We have not sent you except as a bearer of good news and a warner.

Yuksel 17:109 They fall upon their chins crying, and it increases them in humility.

Transliteration Wa yakhirru_na lil azqa_ni yabku_na wa yaziduhum khusyu_'a_(n).

17: 110

Pickthall Say (unto mankind): Cry unto Allah, or cry unto the Beneficent, unto whichsoever ye cry (it is the same). His are the most beautiful names. And thou (Muhammad), be not loud voiced in thy worship nor yet silent therein, but follow a way between.

Yuksel 17:110 Say, "Call on God or call on the Gracious. Whichever it is you call on, to Him are the best names." Do not be loud/public in your contact prayer, nor quiet/private; but seek a path in between.*

Transliteration Qul-id'ulla_ha aw-id'ur rahma_n(a), ayyam ma_ tad'u_ falahul asma_'ul husna_, wa la_ tajhar bi sala_tika wa la_ tukha_fit biha_ wa-btagi baina za_lika sabila_(n).

[[ Yuksel’s note - 017:110 The word ism comes from the root SMY and means "attribute, quality." Regardless of the language, all beautiful attributes may be used for God (the god). Divine attributes do not necessarily define or describe God in an objective sense, but define and describe our relationship with our Creator and the mutual expectations. The word allah (the god) is a contraction of al (the) and elah (god). The Quran uses the word elah (god) in many verses for allah (the god) in the proper context. For instance, in the last chapter of the Quran, God is referred to as "lord of the people." The famous Quranic declaration la ilaha illa allah, therefore, can be translated into English as "there is no god but the god". See 7:180, 26:198; 41:44.

The Quran is correcting the tone of the recitation and manner of the sala prayer performed by Meccan polytheists. Despite this verse reminding us of a moderate tone of voice and moderate display of prayer, the followers of hadith and sunna, like their ancestors, either pray loudly (night time) or quietly (day time). Some even use prayer as political demonstration. This verse simply reminds us not to be ashamed of our prostration before ]]

17: 111

Pickthall And say: Praise be to Allah, Who hath not taken unto Himself a son, and Who hath no partner in the Sovereignty, nor hath He any protecting friend through dependence. And magnify Him with all magnificence.

Yuksel 17:111 Say, "Praise is to God, who has not taken a son, nor does He have a partner in sovereignty, nor does He have an ally out of weakness." Glorify Him greatly.
