6. Sura al-Anam

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نِبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَاطِينَ الإِنسِ وَالْجِنِّ ...

6: 112. Likewise did We make for every Messenger an enemy, evil ones among men and Jinns,

C941. What happened in the history of the Holy Prophet happens in the history of all righteous men who have a Message from Allah. The spirit of evil is ever active and uses men to practice deception by means of highly embellished words and plausible excuses and objections.

Allah permits these things in His Plans. It is not for us to complain. Our faith is tested, and we must stand the test steadfastly.

inspiring each other with flowery discourses by way of deception.

If thy Lord had so planned, they would not have done it:

so leave them and their inventions alone.

6: 112

Asad And thus it is that against every prophet We have set up as enemies the evil forces from among humans as well as from among invisible beings that whisper unto one another glittering half-truths meant to delude the mind. But they could not do this unless your Sustainer had so willed; stand, therefore, aloof from them and from all their false imagery!

Pickthall Thus have We appointed unto every Prophet an adversary--devils of humankind and jinn who inspire in one another plausible discourse through guile. If thy Lord willed, they would not do so; so leave them alone with their devising;

[[ Asad’s note 98 - Lit., “embellished speech” or “varnished falsehood” (lane III, 1223) “by way of delusion” – i.e., half-truths which entice man by their deceptive attractiveness and cause him to overlook all real spiritual values (see also 25:30-31)……..The term “shayatin” (lit., “satans”), on the other hand, is often used in the Quran in the sense of evil forces inherent in man as well as in the spiritual world (cf. 2:14, and the corresponding note). According to several well-authenticated Traditions, quoted by Tabari, the Prophet was asked, “Are there satans from men?” – and he replied, “Yes, and hteye are more evil than the satans from among the invisible beings (al-jinn).” Thus, the meaning of the above verse is t hat every prophet has had to contend against the spiritual – and often physical – enmity of the evil ones who, for whatever reason, refuse to listen to the voice of truth and try to lead others astray.]]

13. [ar-R’ad, Medina 96]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَلَوْ أَنَّ قُرْآنًا سُيِّرَتْ بِهِ الْجِبَالُ أَوْ قُطِّعَتْ بِهِ الأَرْضُ...

13: 31.  If there were a Qur'án with which mountains were moved,

or the earth were cloven asunder,

or the dead were made to speak, (this would be the one!)

But, truly, the Command is with Allah in things!

C1847. Everything is possible and in Allah's power. His Plan is beneficent and all-embracing. But it is not for His creatures to dictate to Him, or demand what He should do, or how He should do it.

The Command is with Allah in all things. The Believers know His omnipotence, and they also know that He will order His world for the best.

Do not the Believers know, that, had Allah (so) willed, He could have guided all mankind (to the Right)?

But the Unbelievers -- never will disaster cease to seize them for their (ill) deeds,

or to settle close to their homes, until the Promise of Allah come to pass,

for, verily, Allah will not fail in His promise.

C1848. Let not the Unbelievers think that if they seem to prosper for a time, that is the end of the matter. They are warned about three things.

1.     Their ill deeds must carry evil consequences for them all the time, though they may not perceive them for a certain time.

2.     Their homes, their places of resort, the circles in which they move, will also be haunted by their ill deeds and their consequences. For evil makes a complex of its environment. The walls of Jericho, when they fall, must bring down all Jericho in its ruins.

3.     The ultimate Disaster, the final Reckoning, must come, for Allah never fails in His promise. True values must eventually be restored: the good to the good, and the evil to the evil.

The Commentators draw illustrations from the life of the Prophet, his exile from Makkah, and his restoration. A similar miracle works in all history. But the Command is with Allah.

Pickthall Had it been possible for a Lecture to cause the mountains to move, or the earth to be torn asunder, or the dead to speak, (this Quran would have done so). Nay, but Allah's is the whole command. Do not those who believe know that, had Allah willed, He could have guided all mankind? As for those who disbelieve, disaster ceaseth not to strike them because of what they do, or it dwelleth near their home until the threat of Allah come to pass. Lo! Allah faileth not to keep the tryst.

Yuksel If there were a Quran/recitation with which mountains were moved, the earth were sliced, or the dead were made to speak… No, to God is all matters. Did not those who acknowledge know that if God wished He would have guided all the people? As for those who reject, until God's promise comes true, a disaster will continue to strike them

14. Surah Ibrahim

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

يُثَبِّتُ اللّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ بِالْقَوْلِ الثَّابِتِ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الآخِرَةِ...

14: 27.  Allah will establish in strength those who believe, with the Word that stands firm, in this world and in the Hereafter;

but Allah will leave, to stray, those who do wrong:

Allah doeth what He willeth.

C1903. His Will and Plan may be above comprehension, but will prevail over all things. It is not like the will of man, who may plan good things but is not necessarily able to carry them out.
