9. Sura at-Tawbah

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

فَلَمَّا آتَاهُم مِّن فَضْلِهِ بَخِلُواْ بِهِ وَتَوَلَّواْ وَّهُم مُّعْرِضُونَ ﴿٧٦﴾

9: 76.  But when He did bestow of His bounty, they became covetous, and turned back (from their Covenant), averse (from its fulfillment).

9: 77.  So He hath put as a consequence hypocrisy into their hearts, (to last) till the day whereon they shall meet Him:

C1332. If men are false to their covenants and words, the natural consequence will be hypocrisy to cover their falsehood. Such consequences will last till the Day of Judgment, when they will have to account for their deeds.

They may think that they are deceiving men by their hypocrisy, but they cannot deceive Allah, to Whom all their most secret thoughts and plots and doings are known.

because they broke their Covenant with Allah, and because they lied (again and again).

Other Versions:

9: 76 Asad But as soon as He has given them [aught] out of His bounty, they cling to it niggardly, and turn away in their obstinacy [from all that they have bowed]:

Pickthall Yet when He gave them of His bounty, they boarded it and turned away, averse;

Transliteration Falamma_ a_ta_hum min fadlihi bakhilu_ bihi wa tawallau wa hum mu'ridu_n(a).

9: 77

Asad whereupon He causes hypocrisy to take root in their hearts, [therein to remain] until the Day on which they shall meet Him [note 105] - because they have failed to fulfill the vow which they had made unto God, and because they were wont to lie [note 106].

Pickthall So He hath made the consequence (to be) hypocrisy in their hearts until the day when they shall meet Him, because they broke their word to Allah that they promised Him, and because they lied.

Transliteration Fa a'qabahum nifa_qan fi qulu_bihim ila_ yaumi yalqaunahu_ bima_ akhlafulla_ha ma_ wa'adu_hu wa bima_ ka_nu_ yakzibu_n(a).

[[ Asad’s note 105 – Lit., “He has caused hypocrisy to become for them a consequence (a’qabahum) in their hearts until the Day of on which they shall meet Him”…………..Thus, the Quran states that it is excessive love of worldly possessions which gives rise, in a certain type of mean, to the attitude of mind described as “hypocrisy” – and not vice versa (see also note 29:11 and the corresponding note 7). Cf. in this connection the Prophet’s saying, reported as Abu Hurayrah: “The mark (ayah) of the hypocrite is threefold: when he speaks, he lies; and when he promises, he breaks his promise; and when he is trusted, he betrays” (Bukhari, Muslim Trimidhi and Nasa’I;……………….]]

[[ Ali’s notes -

1332 If men are false to their covenants and words, the natural consequence will be hypocrisy to cover their falsehood. Such consequences will last till the Day of Judgment, when they will have to account for their deeds. They may think that they are deceiving men by their hypocrisy, but they cannot deceive Allah, to Whom all their most secret thoughts and plots and doings are known. (9.77)

1333 When financial help is necessary for the Cause, every Muslim contributes what he can. Those who can afford large sums are proud to bring them in of their own free-will, and those who are very poor contribute their mite or their labour. Both kinds of gifts are equally precious because of the faith and good-will behind them, and only cynics will laugh at the scantiness of the one or the lavishness of the other. Sometimes they not only laugh, but attribute wrong motives to the givers. Such conduct is here reprimanded. (9.79)

1334 An awful warning for those who actively oppose the Cause of Allah. The Holy Prophet was by nature full of mercy and forgiveness. He prayed for his enemies. But in such a case even his prayers are nullified by their attitude of rejecting Allah. (9.80) ]]

11. Sura Hud

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَلاَ يَنفَعُكُمْ نُصْحِي إِنْ أَرَدتُّ أَنْ أَنصَحَ لَكُمْ إِن كَانَ اللّهُ يُرِيدُ أَن يُغْوِيَكُمْ...

11: 34.    "Of no profit will be my counsel to you, much as I desire to give you (good) counsel, if it be that Allah willeth to leave you astray:

C1527. But Noah's heart bleeds for his people. They are preparing their own undoing! All his efforts are to be vain! Obstinate as they are, Allah's grace must be withdrawn, and then who can help them, and what use is any counsel?

But again he will try to remind them of their Lord, and turn their face to Him. For their ultimate return to His judgment-seat is certain, to answer for their conduct.

He is your Lord! and to Him will ye return!"

Other Versions:

11: 34

Asad For, my advice will not benefit you- if it be God’s will that you shall remain lost in grievous error [note 56]. He is your Sustainer, and unto Him you must return.”

Pickthall My counsel will not profit you if I were minded to advise you, if Allah's will is to keep you astray. He is your lord and unto Him ye will be brought hack.

Transliteration Wa la_ yanfa'ukum nushi in arattu an ansaha lakum in ka_nalla_hu yuridu ay yugwiyakum, huwa rabbukum, wa ilaihi turja'u_n(a).

[[ Asad’s note 56 - …..the expression “an yughwiyakum” – which literally means “that He shall cause you to err” – is to be understood as “that He shall punish you for your sins”…………………..supported by Zamakhshari in his commentary on the above verse: “When God, knowing the persistence [in sinning] on the part of one who denies the truth (al-kafir), leaves him in this condition…….]]

[[ Ruby’s note – God is the Cause of all causes: He sustains everything including a person’s work. If one is persistent and resolved not to yield to any reason or appeal of the conscience, God allows him/her to accumulate in sin to ultimately deserving destruction. This Will of God is due to the will of a human combined with arrogance and obstinacy to a high degree. It is therefore important that one remains humble and open to ideas and to remain sincere in his/her search of truth. Arrogance and self-assurance eventually would lead to failure. ]]

18. Sura Al Kahf

Ali’s version & Quranic Text:

18: 28.  And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking his Face;

C2369. Cf. 6:52 and n. 870.

The true servants of Allah are those whose hearts are turned to Him morning, noon, and night, and who seek not worldly gain, but Allah's Grace, Allah's own Self, His Presence and nearness.

Even if they are poor in this world's goods, their society gives far more inward and spiritual satisfaction than worldly grandeur or worldly attractions.

and let not thine eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life;

nor obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us,

one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.

C2370. For those who stray from Allah's path, Allah's Grace is ever anxious: it seeks to reclaim them and bring them back to the path.

If such a one resists, and follows his own lusts, a point is reached when his case becomes hopeless. Allah's Grace does not then Teach him, and he is abandoned to his pride and insolence. Beware of following the example or advice of such a one or seeking his society, or hankering after his wretched idols.

Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning

Muhammad Asad

And contain thyself in patience by the side of all who at morn and at evening invoke their Sustainer, seeking His countenance, and let not thine eyes pass beyond them in quest of the beauties of this world's life; and pay no heed to any whose heart We have rendered heedless of all remembrance of Us because he had always followed [only] his own desires, abandoning all that is good and true.

&#x21E8

M. M. Pickthall

Restrain thyself along with those who cry unto their Lord at morn and evening, seeking His Countenance; and let not thine eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp of the life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our remembrance, who followeth his own lust and whose case hath been abandoned.

&#x21E8

Shakir

And withhold yourself with those who call on their Lord morning and evening desiring His goodwill, and let not your eyes pass from them, desiring the beauties of this world's life; and do not follow him whose heart We have made unmindful to Our remembrance, and he follows his low desires and his case is one in which due bounds are exceeded.

&#x21E8

Yusuf Ali

And keep thy soul content with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face; and let not thine eyes pass beyond them, seeking the pomp and glitter of this Life; no obey any whose heart We have permitted to neglect the remembrance of Us, one who follows his own desires, whose case has gone beyond all bounds.

&#x21E8

[Al-Muntakhab]

Be patient O Muhammad and rest content with those who invoke Allah's mercy and conciliation morning and evening in quest of nothing but His acceptance and His countenance speaking good will. And let not your mind's eyes turn aside from them or vacillate between them and the worldly-minded, setting your thoughts upon the ephemeral and fleeting glories of the world. Nor should you obey the one neglecting his duty to Allah and by consequence We closed his heart's ears, the one who counsels deaf and lusts after his vain desires and carries his vanity to excess that he cannot be reclaimed from a life of vice nor will he be reclaimed by Allah's grace.

&#x21E8

[Progressive Muslims]

And have patience upon yourself regarding those who call their Lord in the morning and evening seeking His direction, and let not your eyes overlook them that you seek the beauty of this worldly life. And do not obey the one whom We have made his heart heedless of Our remembrance and he followed his desire, and his fate was lost.
