30. Surah Ar Rum[The Romans]

Asad’s Version:


(30:36) And [thus it is:] when we let men taste [Our] grace, they rejoice in it; but if evil befalls them as an outcome of what their own hands have wrought" lo! they lose all hope!

(30:37) Are they, then, not aware that it is God who grants abundant sustenance, or gives it in scant measure, unto whomever He wills? In this, behold, there are messages indeed for people who will believe!


30:38 Hence, give his due to the near of kin, as well as to the needy and the wayfarer; 34 this is best for all who seek God's countenance: for it is they, they that shall attain to a happy state!

(30:39) And [remember:] whatever you may give out in usury so that it might increase through [other] people's possessions will bring [you] no increase in the sight of God 35 - whereas all that you give out in charity, seeking God's countenance, (will be blessed by Him: 36 ] for it is they,they (who thus seek His countenance] that shall have their recompense multiplied!


The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:


وَإِذَا أَذَقْنَا النَّاسَ رَحْمَةً فَرِحُوا بِهَا...

30: 36 When We give men a taste of Mercy, they exult thereat:

...وَإِن تُصِبْهُمْ سَيِّئَةٌ بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ إِذَا هُمْ يَقْنَطُونَ ﴿٣٦﴾

and when some evil afflicts them because of what their (own) hands have sent forth, behold, they are in despair!

أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاء وَيَقْدِرُ...

30: 37. See they not that Allah enlarges the provision and restricts it, to whomsoever He pleases?

Allah's grant of certain gifts to some, as well as His withholding of certain gifts from others, are themselves Signs (trials or warnings) to men of faith and understanding.

...إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ ﴿٣٧﴾

Verily in that are Signs for those who believe.

فَآتِ ذَا الْقُرْبَى حَقَّهُ وَالْمِسْكِينَ وَابْنَ السَّبِيلِ...

30: 38. So give what is due to kindred, the needy, and the wayfarer.

... ذَلِكَ خَيْرٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ...

That is best for those who seek the Countenance, of Allah,

and it is they who will prosper.

وَمَا آتَيْتُم مِّن رِّبًا لِّيَرْبُوَ فِي أَمْوَالِ النَّاسِ فَلَا يَرْبُو عِندَ اللَّهِ...

30: 39. That which ye lay out for increase through the property of (other) people, will have no increase with Allah:

C3552. Riba (literally 'usury' or 'interest') is prohibited, for the principle is that any profit which we should seek should be through our own exertions and at our own expense, not through exploiting other people or at their expense, however we may wrap up the process in the spacious phraseology of high finance or City jargon.

But we are asked to go beyond this negative precept of avoiding what is wrong. We should show our active love for our neighbor by spending of our own substance or resources or the utilization of our own talents and opportunities in the service of those who need them. Then our reward or recompense will not be merely what we deserve. It will be multiplied to many times more than our strict account.

According to Commentators this verse specially applies to those who give to others, whether gifts or services, in order to receive from them greater benefits in return. Such seemingly good acts are void of any merit and deserve no reward from Allah, since He knows the real intention behind such ostensibly good deeds. (R).

...وَمَا آتَيْتُم مِّن زَكَاةٍ تُرِيدُونَ وَجْهَ اللَّهِ فَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُضْعِفُونَ ﴿٣٩﴾

but that which ye lay out for charity, seeking the Countenance of Allah, (will increase): it is these who will get a recompense multiplied.

C3553. Seeking the "Face" or "Countenance" of Allah, i.e., out of our pure love for the true vision of Allah's own Self.

الم ﴿١﴾

31: 1. Alif Lam Mim.

تِلْكَ آيَاتُ الْكِتَابِ الْحَكِيمِ ﴿٢﴾

31: 2. These are Verses of the Wise Book, --

C3580. This Surah relates to Wisdom, and the Quran is appropriately called the Wise Book, or the Book of Wisdom.

In verse 12 below there is a reference to Luqman the Wise. "Wise" in this sense (Hakim) means not only a man versed in knowledge human and divine, but one carrying out in practical conduct ('amal) the right course in life to the utmost of his power.

His knowledge is correct and practical, but not necessarily complete: for no man is perfect.

Such an ideal involves the conception of a man of heroic action as well as of deep and workman-like knowledge of nature and human nature,-not merely dreams or speculation. That ideal was fulfilled in a most remarkable degree in the holy Prophet, and in the sacred Book which was revealed through him. "The Wise Book" (Kilab-ul-haklm) is one of the titles of the Quran.

هُدًى وَرَحْمَةً لِّلْمُحْسِنِينَ ﴿٣﴾

31: 3. A Guide and a Mercy to the Doers of Good, --

C3581. A guide to all, and, to those who accept its guidance, a source of mercy as leading them to Salvation.

الَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ الصَّلَاةَ وَيُؤْتُونَ الزَّكَاةَ وَهُم بِالْآخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ ﴿٤﴾

31: 4. Those who

- establish regular Prayer,

- and give regular Charity,

- and have (in their hearts) the assurance of the Hereafter.

C3582. The righteous are distinguished here by three marks, which are summed up in the phrase "doers of good", viz.:

1. they yearn towards Allah in duty, love, and prayer,

2. they love and serve their fellow-men in charity,

3. they win peace and rest for themselves in the assured hope of the Future.

أُوْلَئِكَ عَلَى هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ ...

31: 5. These are on (true) guidance from their Lord;

C3583. They get these blessings because they submit their will to Allah's Will and receive His guidance. They will do well in this life (from the highest standpoint) and they will reach their true Goal in the Future.

...وَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ ﴿٥﴾

and these are the ones who will prosper.

In The Name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace:


31:1


Alif. Lam. Mim. 1


THESE ARE MESSAGES of the divine writ, full of wisdom, 2 (31:3) providing guidance and grace unto the doers of good (31:4) who are constant in prayer and dispense charity: 3 for it is they, they who in their innermost are certain of the life to come!


31:5


It is they who follow the guidance [that comes to them) from their Sustainer; and it is they, they who shall attain to a happy state!
