40. Surah Ghafir (Forgiving)/al mumin
Mecca 60 [85 verses]
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُجَادِلُونَ فِي آيَاتِ اللَّهِ بِغَيْرِ سُلْطَانٍ أَتَاهُمْ...
40:56. Those who dispute about the Signs of Allah without any authority bestowed on them --
... إِن فِي صُدُورِهِمْ إِلَّا كِبْرٌ مَّا هُم بِبَالِغِيهِ ...
there is nothing in their breasts but (the quest of) greatness, which they shall never attain to:
C4430. The Disputes are actuated by nothing but the desire for self-glory and self-aggrandizement. Their desire is not likely to receive fruition, but others should take warning from it.
... فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللَّهِ...
seek refuge, then, in Allah:
... إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ ﴿٥٦﴾
it is He Who hears and sees (all things).
Asad’s Version:
40:56 [Asad] Behold, as for those who call God's messages in question without having any evidence therefor" - in their hearts is nothing but overweening self-conceit, which they will never be able to satisfy: 40 seek thou, then, refuge with God - for, verily, He alone is all-hearing, all- seeing!
