PRAYERS

2: 238 Be ever mindful of prayers, and of praying in the most excellent way; and stand before God in devout obedience.

2;239 But if you are in danger, (pray) walking or riding; and when you are secure, bear God in mind - since it is He who taught you what you did not previously know.

3: 35, 36 MARY’S MOTHER’S PRAYER

3: 42

3: 61 Prayer to invoke God’s curse upon those who are telling a lie. (10 Hijra, The prophets invitation to the Christians.)

3: 147 (prayer from "God-devoted men" around previous prophets, see 146)

and all that they said was this: " O our Sustainer! Forgive us our sins and the lack of moderation in our doings! And make firm our steps, and succor us against people who deny the truth!" Asad

Their cry was only that they said: Our Lord! Forgive is for our sins and wasted efforts, make our foothold sure, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk. Pickthall

All that they said was: " Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and anything we may have done

That transgressed our duty: establish our feet firmly, and help us against those that resist Faith." Ali

3: 148 And God gave them a reward in this world and an excellent reward of the Hereafter. For God loves those who do good.

3: 190, 191 Verily, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the succession of night and day, there are indeed messages for all who are endowed with insight, who remember God when they stand, and when they sit, and when they lie down to sleep, and reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth: "O our Sustainer! You have not created this without meaning and purpose. Limitless are you in Thy glory! Keep us safe then from suffering through fire!" also 3:192-194

3: 195 And thus does their Sustainer answer their prayer: " I shall not lose sight of the labor of any of you who labors (in My wau), be it man or woman: each of you is an issue of the other, ….

4: 162 But as for those from among them who are deeply rooted in knowledge, and the believers who believe in that which has been bestowed upon thee from on high as well as that which was bestowed from on high before thee, and those who are constant in prayer, and spend in charity and all who believe in God and the Last Day – these it is unto whom We shall grant a mighty reward.

2.238 Be ever mindful of prayers, and of praying in the most excellent way; and stand before God in devout obedience.

2; 239 But if you are in danger, (pray) walking or riding; and when you are again secure, bear God in mind-since it is He who taught you what you did not previously know.

4: 43 O you have attained to faith! Do not attempt to pray while you are in a state of drunkenness, [but wait] until you know what you are saying; nor yet [while you are]

in a state requiring total ablution, until you have bathed - except if you are traveling [and are unable to do so] or have just satisfied a want of nature, or have cohabited with a woman, and can find no water - then take resort to pure dust, passing [therewith] lightly over your face and your hands. Behold, God is indeed an absolver of sins, much-forgiving. Asad, see note

4: 77 Are you not aware of those who have been told, " Curb your hands, and be constant in prayer, and render the purifying dues? But as soon as fighting is ordained for them, lo, some of them stand in awe of men as one should stand in awe of God - or in ever greater awe - and say……………."

Prayers in time of danger and travel. (see also Ali, Pickthall, etc.)

4: 101 And when you go forth on earth, you will incur no sin by shortening your prayers if you have reason to fear that those who are bent on denying the truth might suddenly fall upon you: for , verily, those who deny the truth are your open foes.

4: 102 Thus, when you are among the believers and about to lead them in prayer, let them stand up with you, retaining their arms. Then, after they have finished their prayer, let them provide you cover while another group who have not yet prayed, shall come forward and pray with you, being fully prepared against danger and retaining their arms:

those who are bent on denying the truth would love to see you oblivious of your arms and your equipment, so that they might fall upon you in a surprise attack. But it shall not be wrong for you to lay down your arms [while you pray] if you are troubled by rain or if you are ill; but [always] be fully prepared against danger.

4: 102…….Verily, God has readied shameful suffering for all who deny the truth!

Prayer at Stated Times a Duty

4: 103 And when you have finished your prayer, remember God - standing and sitting and lying down; and when you are once again secure, observe your prayers [fully]. Verily, for all believers prayer is indeed a sacred duty linked to particular times [of day]. Asad

4:103 When you pass [congregational] prayers, celebrate Allah's praises, standing, sitting down, or lying down on your sides; But when you are free from danger, set up regular Prayers: for such prayers are enjoined on Believers at stated times. Ali

5:5 Asad Note 16: ........It is immediately followed by a reference to prayer: for it is in prayer that man’s dependence on God finds most conscious and deliberate expression.

5: 25 Prayed [Moses] : “ O my Sustainer! Of none am I master but of myself and my brother [Aaron] : draw thou, then a dividing-line between us and these iniquitous folk!”

5: 26 Answered He: “Then, verily, this [land] shall be forbidden to them for forty years, while they wander on earth, bewildered, to and fro; and sorrow you not over these iniquitous folk.”

Ayah 124 Yusuf Ali And remember that Abraham was tried by his Lord with certain commands which he fulfilled; He said: "I will make thee an Imam to the nations." He pleaded: "And also (Imams) from my offspring!" He answered: "But my promise is not within the reach of evil-doers."

Pickthall And (remember) when his Lord tried Abraham with (His) commands, and he fulfilled them, He said: Lo! I have appointed thee a leader for mankind. (Abraham) said: And of my offspring (will there be leaders)? He said: My covenant includeth not wrongdoers.

Pickthall And when We made the House (at Mecca) a resort for mankind and a sanctuary, (saying): Take as your place of worship the place where Abraham stood (to pray). And We imposed a duty upon Abraham and Ishmael, (saying): Purify My house for those who go around and those who meditate therein and those who bow down and prostrate themselves (in worship).

He said: "(Yea) and such as reject faith for a while will I grant them their pleasure but will soon drive them to the torment of fire an evil destination (indeed)!"

Pickthall And when Abraham prayed: My Lord! Make this a region of security and bestow upon its people fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day, He answered: As for him who disbelieveth, I shall leave him in contentment for a while, then I shall compel him to the doom of fire--a hapless journey's end!

Asad And does He give you something out of what you may be asking of Him; and should you try to count God’s blessings, you could never compute them. [And yet] behold, man is indeed most persistent in wrongdoing, stubbornly ingrate!

Yusuf Ali And He giveth you of all that ye ask for. But if ye count the favors of Allah never will ye be able to number them: verily man is given up to injustice and ingratitude.

Pickthall And He giveth you of all ye ask of Him, and if ye would count the bounty of Allah ye cannot reckon it. Lo! man is verily a wrong-doer, an ingrate.

[Ali’s note: 1910 Sincere and true prayer in faith is answered by Allah. Thus He gives us everything which a wise and benevolent Providence can give. (14.34)

  1. I have tried to render the intensive forms of the Arabic by what I consider their near equivalent here: the phrase "given up to injustice and ingratitude" suggests habitual ignoring of just values and ingratitude for the innumerable gifts and favours which Allah has showered on mankind. (14.34)]

[Asad note 47: God satisfies every one of man’s desires, provided that His unfathomable wisdom regards its satisfaction as ultimately beneficial to the human being concerned: this is the meaning of the preposition min preceding the phrase “what you may be asking”. ]

14: 35

Yusuf Ali Behold the youths betook themselves to the Cave: they said "Our Lord! bestow on us Mercy from Thyself and dispose of our affair for us in the right way!

Pickthall When the young men fled for refuge to the Cave and said: Our Lord! Give us mercy from Thy presence and shape for us right conduct in our plight.
