19. Surah Maryam

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَنَرِثُهُ مَا يَقُولُ وَيَأْتِينَا فَرْدًا ﴿٨٠﴾

19: 80.  To Us shall return all that he talks of, and he shall appear before Us bare and alone.

C2524. Literally, "We shall inherit", Cf. 19:40 and n. 2492.

Even if the man had property and power, it must go back to the Source of all things, and the man must appear before the Judgment-seat, alone and unaccompanied, stripped of all the things from which he expected so much!

And the argument is now rounded off towards the close of the Surah.

19: 93.  Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) Most Gracious as a servant.

19: 94.  He does take and account of them (all), and hath numbered them (all) exactly.

C2531. Allah has no sons or favorites or parasites, such as we associate with human beings.

On the other hand every creature of His gets His love, and His cherishing care.

Everyone of them, however humble, is individually marked before His Throne of Justice and Mercy, and will stand before Him on his own deserts.

19: 95.  And every one of them will come to him singly on the Day of Judgment.

19: 96.  On those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, will (Allah) Most Gracious bestow Love.

C2532. His own love, and the love of man's fellow-creatures, in this world and in the Hereafter.

Goodness breeds love and peace, and sin breeds hatred and contention.

19: 97.  So have We made the (Qur'án) easy in thine own tongue,

that with it thou mayest give Glad Tidings to the righteous, and warnings to people given to contention.

19: 98.  But how many (countless) generation before them have We destroyed?

C2533. Cf. 19:74, from which this sentence is brought up as a reminiscence, showing the progress of sin, the Guidance which Allah gives to the good, the degradation of blasphemy, the respite granted, and the final End, when personal responsibility will be enforced.

Canst thou find a single one of them (now) or hear (so much as) a whisper of them?

Others version:

19: 80

Asad and divest him of all that he is [now] speaking of: for [ on Judgment Say] he will appear before Us in a lonely state.

Yusuf Ali To Us shall return all that he talks of and he shall appear before Us bare and alone.

Pickthall And We shall inherit from him that whereof he spoke, and he will come unto Us, alone (without his wealth and children).

Transliteration Wa naritsuhu_ ma_ yaqu_lu wa ya'tina farda_

[ Asad’s note 68: Lit., “inherit from him” – a metaphor based on the concept of one person’s taking over what once belonged to, or was vested in, another. ]

19: 93

Asad Not one of all [the beings] that are in the heavens or on earth appears before the Most Gracious other than as a servant:

Yusuf Ali Not one of the beings in the heavens and the earth but must come to (Allah) Most Gracious as a servant.

Pickthall There is none in the heavens and the earth but cometh unto the Beneficent as a slave.

[Asad’s note 78 – I.e., all of them – whether men or angels – are but created ebings, having no share whatever in His divinity, and all of them submit, consciously or unconsciously, to His will………]

Transliteration In kul lu man fis sama_wa_ti wal ardhi il la_ a_tir rahma_ni 'abda_

[Ruby’s note – The term servant here is pervasive in meaning. All things in the created Universe, seen or unseen, is complying with the set laws and nature God has inscribed in them. This compliance is called submission to the Will and Law of God, the Quran conveys this state as Islam. ]

19: 94

Asad indeed, He has full cognizance of them, and has numbered them with [unfailing] numbering;

Yusuf Ali He does take and account of them (all) and hath numbered them (all) exactly.

Pickthall Verily He knoweth them and numbereth them with (right) numbering

.

Transliteration Laqad ahsha_hum wa ad dahum ad da_

19: 95

Asad and every one of them will appear before Him on Resurrection Day in a lonely state.

Yusuf Ali And every one of them will come to him singly on the Day of Judgment.

Transliteration Wa kul luhum a_tihi yaumal qiya_mati farda_

19: 96

Asad Verily, those who attain to faith and do righteous deeds will the Most Gracious endow with love:

Pickthall Lo! those who believe and do good works, the Beneficent will appoint for them love

Transliteration In nal lazina a_manu_ wa 'amilus sha_liha_ti sayaj'alu lahumur rahma_nu wud da_

[Asad’s note 80: I.e., bestow on them His love and endow them with the capability to love His creation, as well as cause them to be loved by their fellow-men. As is shown in the next verse, this gift of Love is inherent in the guidance offered to man through divine revelation. ]

[Ali’s note - 2532 His own love, and the love of man's fellow-creatures, in this world and in the Hereafter. Goodness breeds love and peace, and sin breeds hatred and contention. (19.96) ]

19: 97

Asad and only to this end have We made this [divine writ] easy to understand, in thine own tongue, [O Prophet,] so that thou might convey thereby a glad tiding to the God-conscious, and warn thereby those who are given to [futile] contention:

Yusuf Ali So have We made the (Qur'an) easy in thine own tongue that with it thou mayest give Glad Tidings to the righteous and warnings to people given to contention.

Pickthall And We make (this Scripture) easy in thy tongue, (O Muhammad) only that thou mayst bear good tidings therewith unto those who ward off (evil), and warn therewith the froward folk.

Transliteration Fa in nama_ yas sarna_hu bilisa_nika litubasy syira bihil mut taqina wa tundzira bihi qaumal lud da_

19: 98

Asad for, how many a generation have We destroyed before their time – [and] can you perceive any one them [now], or hear any whisper of them?

Pickthall And how many a generation before them have We destroyed! Canst thou (Muhammad) see a single man of them, or hear from them the slightest sound?
