3. Sura al-Imran

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

3: 198. On the other hand, for those who fear their Lord, are gardens, with rivers flowing beneath, therein are they to dwell (for ever),

a gift from the presence of Allah,

and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.

3: 199. And there are, certainly, among the People of the Book, those who believe in Allah, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them,

bowing in humility to Allah:

they will not sell the signs of Allah for a miserable gain!

for them is a reward with their Lord,

and Allah is swift in account.

3: 198

Asad Whereas those who remain conscious of their Sustainer shall have gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide: a ready welcome from God. And that which is with God is best for the truly virtuous.

Yusuf Ali On the other hand for those who fear their Lord are gardens with rivers flowing beneath therein are they to dwell (for ever) a gift from the presence of Allah and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.

Pickthall But those who keep their duty to their Lord, for them are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will be safe forever. A gift of welcome from their Lord. That which Allah hath in store is better for the righteous.

3: 199

Asad And, behold, among the followers of earlier revelation there are indeed such as [truly] believe in God, and in that which has been bestowed from on high upon you as well as in that which has been bestowed upon them. Standing in awe of God, they do not barter away God’s messages for a trifling gain. They shall have their reward with their Sustainer – for behold, God is swift in reckoning!

Yusuf Ali And there are certainly among the people of the Book those who believe in Allah in the revelation to you and in the revelation to them bowing in humility to Allah: they will not sell the signs of Allah for a miserable gain! for them is a reward with their Lord and Allah is swift in account.

Pickthall And Lo! of the People of the Scripture there are some who believe in Allah and that which is revealed unto you and that which was revealed unto them, humbling themselves before Allah. They purchase not a trifling gain at the price of the revelations of Allah. Verily their reward is with their Lord, and Lo! Allah is swift to take account.

4. Sura an-Nisa

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

4: 160. For the iniquity of the Jews We made unlawful for them certain (foods) good and wholesome which had been lawful for them;

C667. Cf. 6:146.

The ceremonial law of the Jews forbade the eating of the flesh of the camel, rabbit and hare (Leviticus 11:4-6), and the fat of oxen, sheep, and goats (Leviticus 7:23), and was in other respects very strict.

in that they hindered many from Allah's way.

4: 161. That they took usury (interest), though they were forbidden; and that they devoured men's substance wrongfully;

We have prepared for those among them who reject faith a grievous punishment.

4: 162. But those among them who are well-grounded in knowledge, and the believers, believe in what hath been revealed to thee;

and (especially) those who establish regular prayer and practice regular charity and believe in Allah and in the Last Day:

to them shall We soon give a great reward.

4: 162 [ an-Nisa, Medina 92]

[[ Asad’s note 177- According to the grammarians of the Basrah school, and especially Sibawayh, the use of the accusative (mansub) case in the expression al-muqimin as –salah (“those who are constant in prayer”) – instead of the nominative al-muqimun – is a legitimate grammatical device meant to stress the special, praiseworthy quality attaching to prayer and to those who are devoted to it (see Zamakhshari and Razi); hence my interpolation of “especially” between brackets.]]
