2. Surah Al Baqarah
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
وَبَشِّرِ الَّذِين آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ ...
2: 25. But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness,
... أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ...
that their portion is Gardens, beneath which rivers flow.
... كُلَّمَا رُزِقُواْ مِنْهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقاً قَالُواْ ...
Every time they are fed with fruits therefrom, they say:
... هَـذَا الَّذِي رُزِقْنَا مِن قَبْلُ ...
"Why, this is what we were fed with before,"
... وَأُتُواْ بِهِ مُتَشَابِهاً...
for they are given things in similitude;
... وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا أَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ ...
and they have therein companions (pure and holy);
C44. What can be more delightful than a Garden where you observe from a picturesque height a beautiful landscape round you, - rivers flowing with crystal water, and fruit tree of which the choicest fruit is before you.
The fruit of goodness is goodness, similar, but choicer in every degree of ascent. You think it is the same, but it is because of your past experiences and associations of memory. (R).
... وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون ﴿٢٥﴾
and they abide therein (for ever).

Asad But unto those who have attained to faith and do good works give the glad tiding that their s shall be gardens through which running water flow. Whenever they are granted fruits therefrom as their appointed sustenance, they will say, “It is this that in days of yore was granted o us as our sustenance!” – for they shall be given something that will recall that [past]. And there shall they have spouses pure, and there shall they abide.
Yusuf Ali But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness that their portion is Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits therefrom they say: "Why this is what we were fed with before" for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions (pure and holy); and they abide therein (for ever).
Pickthall And give glad tidings (O Muhammad) unto those who believe and do good works; that theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow; as often as they are regaled with food of the fruit thereof, they say: This is what was given us aforetime; and it is given to them in resemblance. There for them are pure companions; there for ever they abide.
Transliteration Wa basysyiril lazina a_manu_ wa 'amilus sa_liha_ti anna lahum janna_tin tajri min tahtihal anha_r(u), kullama_ ruziqu_ minha_ min samatir rizqa_(n), qa_lu_ ha_zal lazi ruziqna_ min qablu wa utu_ bihi mutasyabiha_(n), wa lahum fiha_ azwa_jum mutahharatuw wahum fiha_ kha_lidu_n(a).
[Ali’s note: 44 This is the antithesis to the last verse. If fire is the symbol of Punishment, the Garden is the symbol of felicity. And what can be more delightful than a Garden where you observe from a picturesque height a beautiful landscape round you, - rivers flowing with crystal water, and fruit trees of which the choicest fruit is before you. The fruit of goodness is goodness, similar, but choicer in every degree of ascent. You think it is the same, but it is because of your past experiences and associations of memory. Then there is companionship. If sex is suggested, its physical associations are at once negatived by the addition of the word Mutahharatun "pure and holy." The Arabic epithet is in the intensive form, and must be translated by two adjectives denoting purity in the highest degree. The Companionship is that of souls and applies to both sexes in the physical world of men and women. And this felicity is not a mere passing phase but will abide beyond the realms of Time. (2.25) ]
[Asad’s note 17: …………………In other words, man’s action and attitudes in this life will be mirrored in their “fruits”, or consequences, in the life to come – as has been expressed elsewhere in the Quran in the verses, “And he who shall have done an atom’s weight of good, shall behold it; and he who shall have done an atom’s weight of evil, shall behold it” ( 99:7-8). AS regards the reference to “spouses” in the next sentence, it is to be noted that the term zawj (of which azwaj I the plural) signifies either of the two components of a couple – that is, the male as well as the female.]
3. Sura al-Imran
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
قُلْ أَؤُنَبِّئُكُم بِخَيْرٍ مِّن ذَلِكُمْ ...
3: 15. Say: shall I give you glad tidings of things far better than those?
...لِلَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا...
For the righteous are gardens in nearness to their Lord, with rivers flowing beneath; therein is their eternal home;
...وَأَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ وَرِضْوَانٌ مِّنَ اللّهِ...
with companions pure (and holy), and the good pleasure of Allah.
...وَاللّهُ بَصِيرٌ بِالْعِبَاد ِ﴿١٥﴾
For in Allah's sight are (all) His servants.
فَاسْتَجَابَ لَهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ...
3: 195. And their Lord hath accepted of them, and answered them:
...أَنِّي لاَ أُضِيعُ عَمَلَ عَامِلٍ مِّنكُم مِّن ذَكَرٍ أَوْ أُنثَى بَعْضُكُم مِّن بَعْضٍ...
"Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you, be he male or female:
ye are members, one of another;
C500. In Islam the equal status of the sexes is not only recognised but insisted on. If sex distinction, which is a distinction in nature, does not count in spiritual matters, still less of course would count artificial distinctions, such as rank, wealth, position, race, colour, birth, etc,
...فَالَّذِينَ هَاجَرُواْ وَأُخْرِجُواْ مِن دِيَارِهِمْ وَأُوذُواْ فِي سَبِيلِي وَقَاتَلُواْ وَقُتِلُواْ...
those who have left their homes, or been driven out therefrom, or suffered harm in My cause, or fought or been slain,
...لأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنْهُمْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ وَلأُدْخِلَنَّهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ ...
verily, I will blot out from them their iniquities, and admit them into gardens with rivers flowing beneath;
... ثَوَابًا مِّن عِندِ اللّهِ...
a reward from the presence of Allah,
C501. Here, and in 3:198 below, and in many places elsewhere, stress is laid on the fact that whatever gift, or bliss will come to the righteous, its chief merit will be that it proceeds from Allah Himself.
"Nearness to Allah" expresses it better than any other symbol.
...وَاللّهُ عِندَهُ حُسْنُ الثَّوَابِ ﴿١٩٥﴾
and from His presence is the best of rewards."
لَكِنِ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْاْ رَبَّهُمْ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ...
3: 198. On the other hand, for those who fear their Lord, are gardens, with rivers flowing beneath, therein are they to dwell (for ever),
... نُزُلاً مِّنْ عِندِ اللّهِ...
a gift from the presence of Allah,
...وَمَا عِندَ اللّهِ خَيْرٌ لِّلأَبْرَارِ﴿١٩٨﴾
and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.

Asad And thus does their Sustainer answer their prayer: “I shall not lose sight of the labors [in My way], be it man or woman: each of you is an issue of the other [note 150]. Hence as for those who forsake the domain of evil [151], and are driven from their homelands, and suffer hurt in My cause, and fight [for it], and are slain – I shall most certainly efface their bad deeds, and shall most certainly bring them into gardens through which running waters flow, as a reward from God: for with God is the most beauteous of rewards.”
Yusuf Ali And their Lord hath accepted of them and answered them: "Never will I suffer to be lost the work of any of you be he male or female: ye are members one of another; those who have left their homes or been driven out there from or suffered harm in My cause or fought or been slain verily I will blot out from them their iniquities and admit them into gardens with rivers flowing beneath; a reward from the presence of Allah and from His presence is the best of rewards."
Pickthall And their Lord hath heard them (and He saith): Lo! I suffer not the work of any worker, male or female, to be lost. Ye proceed one from another. So those who fled and were driven forth from their homes and suffered damage for My cause, and fought and were slain, verily I shall remit their evil deeds from them and verily I shall bring them into Gardens underneath which rivers flow. A reward from Allah. And with Allah is the fairest of rewards.
Transliteration Fastaja_ba lahum rabbuhum anni la_ udi'u 'amala'a_milim minkum min zakarin au unsa_, ba'dukum mim ba'd(in), fallazina ha_jaru_ wa ukhriju_ min diya_rihim wa u_zu_ fi sabili wa qa_talu_ wa qutilu_ la'ukaffiranna'anhum sayyi'a_tihim wa la'udkhilannahum janna_tin tajri min tahtihalanha_r(u), sawa_bam min'indilla_h(i), walla_hu'indahu_ husnus sawa_b(i).

Asad Whereas those who remain conscious of their Sustainer shall have gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide: a ready welcome fro mGod. And that which is with God is best for the truly virtuous.
Yusuf Ali On the other hand for those who fear their Lord are gardens with rivers flowing beneath therein are they to dwell (for ever) a gift from the presence of Allah and that which is in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.
Pickthall But those who keep their duty to their Lord, for them are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will be safe forever. A gift of welcome from their Lord. That which Allah hath in store is better for the righteous.
Transliteration La_kinil lazinat taqau rabbahum lahum janna_tun tajri min tahtihal anha_ru kha_lidina fiha_ nuzulam min'indilla_h(i), wa ma_'indalla_hi khairul lil abra_r(i).
4. Sura an-Nisa
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
4: 13. Those are limits set by Allah:
... وَمَن يُطِعِ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ يُدْخِلْهُ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا...
those who obey Allah and His Messenger will be admitted to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath, to abide therein (for ever)
... وَذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ﴿١٣﴾
and that will be the Supreme achievement.

وَمَن يَعْصِ اللّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَيَتَعَدَّ حُدُودَهُ يُدْخِلْهُ نَارًا...
4: 14. But those who disobey Allah and His Messenger and transgress His limits will be admitted to a fire,
... خَالِدًا فِيهَا وَلَهُ عَذَابٌ مُّهِينٌ ﴿١٤﴾
to abide therein: and they shall have a humiliating punishment.
وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ سَنُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ...
4: 57. But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, We shall soon admit to gardens,
... تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا لَّهُمْ فِيهَا أَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ...
with rivers flowing beneath, their eternal home:
therein shall they have companions pure and holy:
... وَنُدْخِلُهُمْ ظِـلاًّ ظَلِيلاً ﴿٥٧﴾
We shall admit them to shades, cool and ever deepening.
C579. The Garden is contrasted with the Fire: the shade is contrasted with the roasting, Evil grows with what it feeds on.
So goodness and felicity grow with their practice. The good may be alone to start with, but (unlike evil ones) they get Holy Companions.
Just as agony increases with what it suffers (typified by fresh skins growing as the old ones burns out), so felicity finds deeper and deeper meaning (typified by the shades in a garden, which grow deeper and cooler as you proceed into the interior).
وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ سَنُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ...
4: 122. But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, We shall soon admit them to gardens,
... تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا...
with rivers flowing beneath, to dwell therein for ever.
... وَعْدَ اللّهِ حَقًّا ...
Allah's promise is the truth,
... وَمَنْ أَصْدَقُ مِنَ اللّهِ قِيلاً ﴿١٢٢﴾
and whose word can be truer than Allah's?

Asad These are the bounds set by God. And whoever pays heed unto God and His Apostle, him will He bring unto gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide: and this is a triumph supreme.
Yusuf Ali Those are limits set by Allah: those who obey Allah and His Apostle will be admitted to Gardens with rivers flowing beneath to abide therein (for ever) and that will be the Supreme achievement.
Pickthall These are the limits (imposed by) Allah. Whoso obeyeth Allah and His messenger, He will make him enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow, where such will dwell for ever. That will be the great success.
Transliteration Tilka hudu_dulla_h(i), wa may yuti'illa_ha wa rasu_lahu_ yudkhilhu janna_tin tajri min tahtihal anha_ru kha_lidina fiha_, wa za_likal fauzul 'azim(u).
4: 14
Asad And whoever rebels against God and His Apostle and transgresses His bounds, him will He commit unto fire, therein to abide; and shameful suffering awaits him.
Yusuf Ali But those who disobey Allah and His Apostle and transgress His limits will be admitted to a fire to abide therein: and they shall have a humiliating punishment.
Pickthall And whoso disobeyeth Allah and His messenger and transgresseth His limits, He will make him enter Fire, where such will dwell for ever; his will be a shameful doom.
Transliteration Wa may ya'silla_ha wa rasu_lahu_ wa yata'dda hudu_dahu_ yudkhilhu na_ran kha_lidan fiha_, wa lahu_'aza_bum muhin(un).

Yusuf Ali But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness We shall soon admit to gardens with rivers flowing beneath their eternal home: therein shall they have companions pure and holy: We shall admit them to shades cool and ever deepening.

Yusuf Ali But those who believe and do deeds of righteousness We shall soon admit them to gardens with rivers flowing beneath to dwell therein for ever. Allah's promise is the truth and whose word can be truer than Allah's?
Pickthall But as for those who believe and do good works, We shall bring them into gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide for ever. It is a promise from Allah in truth ; and who can be more truthful than Allah in utterance?
Transliteration Wallazina a_manu_ wa 'amilus sa_liha_ti sanudkhiluhum janna_tin tajri min tahtihal anha_ru kha_lidina fiha_ abada_(n), wa'dalla_hi haqqa_(n), wa man asdaqu minalla_hi qila_(n).
5. Surah Al-Ma'idah
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
وَلَقَدْ أَخَذَ اللّهُ مِيثَاقَ بَنِي إِسْرَآئِيلَ وَبَعَثْنَا مِنهُمُ اثْنَيْ عَشَرَ نَقِيبًا...
5: 12. Allah did aforetime take a Covenant from the Children of Israel, and We appointed twelve captains among them,
"Moses... called for the elders of the people... and all the people answered together and said. 'All that the Lord hath spoken we will do.'" (Exod. 19:7-8).
This was under the towering height of Mount Sinai. The chieftains or elders or leaders of the people were selected, one from each of the twelve tribes (see 2:60 and n. 73).
For census purposes the names of the elders of the tribes are given in Num. 1:4-16: they are called "every one the head of the house of his fathers". Later, twelve other "heads of the Children of Israel" were selected to spy but the land of Canaan: their names are mentioned in Num. 13:1-16.

... وَقَالَ اللّهُ إِنِّي مَعَكُمْ ...
and Allah said: "I am with you:
... لَئِنْ أَقَمْتُمُ الصَّلاَةَ وَآتَيْتُمُ الزَّكَاةَ وَآمَنتُم بِرُسُلِي وَعَزَّرْتُمُوهُمْ ...
- if ye (but) establish regular prayers,
- practice regular charity,
- believe in My apostles, honor and assist them and
... وَأَقْرَضْتُمُ اللّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا ...
- loan to Allah a beautiful loan,
The phrase means "spending in the cause of Allah".
Allah in His infinite grace looks upon this as a loan, for which He gives a recompense manifold.
... لَّأُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَلأُدْخِلَنَّكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ ...
verily I will wipe out from you your evils, and admit you to gardens with rivers flowing beneath;
... فَمَن كَفَرَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ مِنكُمْ فَقَدْ ضَلَّ سَوَاء السَّبِيلِ ﴿١٢﴾
but if any of you, after this, resisteth faith, he hath truly wandered from the path of rectitude."
C711. The path of rectitude: or the even way:
قَالَ اللّهُ هَذَا يَوْمُ يَنفَعُ الصَّادِقِينَ صِدْقُهُمْ ...
5: 119. Allah will say: "This is a day on which the truthful will profit from their truth:
... لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٌ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا...
theirs are Gardens, with rivers flowing beneath, their eternal home:
... رَّضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُواْ عَنْهُ ...
Allah well-pleased with them, and they with Allah:
... ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ﴿١١٩﴾
that is the great Salvation, (the fulfillment of all desires)."
C833. Fauz: Felicity, happiness, achievement, salvation, the attainment or fulfilment of desires.
What a beautiful definition of salvation or the end of life! -that we should win Allah's good pleasure and that we should reach the stage at which His good pleasure is all-in-all to us.
لِلّهِ مُلْكُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَمَا فِيهِنَّ ...
5: 120. To Allah doth belong the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and all that is therein,
... وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ ﴿١٢٠﴾
and it is He who hath power over all things.

Asad And, indeed, God accepted a [similar] solemn pledge from the children of Israel when We caused twelve of their leader to be sent [to Canaam as spies]. And God said: “Behold, I shall be with you! If you are constant in prayer, and spend in charity, and believe in My apostles and aid them, and offer up unto God a goodly loan, I will surely efface your bad deeds and bring you into gardens through which running waters flow. But he from among you who, after this, denies the truth, will indeed have strayed from the right path!”
Yusuf Ali Allah did aforetime take a Covenant from the Children of Israel and We appointed twelve captains among them and Allah said: "I am with you: if ye (but) establish regular prayers practice regular charity believe in My apostles honor and assist them and loan to Allah a beautiful loan verily I will wipe out from you your evils and admit you to gardens with rivers flowing beneath; but if any of you after this resist faith he hath truly wandered from the path of rectitude."
Pickthall Allah made a covenant of old with the Children of Israel and We raised among them twelve chieftains: and Allah said: Lo! I am with you. If ye establish worship and pay the poor due, and believe in My messengers and support them, and lend unto Allah a kindly loan, surely I shall remit your sins, and surely I shall bring you into gardens underneath which rivers flow. Whoso among you disbelieve after this will go astray from a plain road.
Transliteration Wa laqad akhazalla_hu misa_qa bani isra_'il(a), wa ba'asna_ minhumusnai 'asyara naqiba_(n), wa qa_lalla_hu inni ma'akum, la'in aqamtumus sala_ta wa a_taitumuz zaka_ta wa a_mantum bi rusuli wa'azzartumu_hum wa aqradtumulla_ha qardan hasanal la'ukaffiranna'ankum sayyi'a_tikum wala'udkhilannakum janna_tin tajri min tahtihal anha_r(u), fa man kafara ba'da za_lika minkum fa qad dalla sawa_'as sabil(i).

Asad [And on Judgment Day] God will say: “ Today, their truthfulness shall benefit all who have been true to their word: theirs shall be gardens through which running waters flow, therein to abide beyond the count of time; well-pleased is God with them, and well-pleased are they with Him: this is the triumph supreme.”
Yusuf Ali Allah will say: "This is a day on which the truthful will profit from their truth: theirs are Gardens with rivers flowing beneath their eternal home: Allah well-pleased with them and they with Allah: that is the great Salvation (the fulfillment of all desires).
Pickthall Allah saith: This is a day in which their truthfulness profiteth the truthful, for theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they are secure for ever, Allah taking pleasure in them and they in Him. That is the great triumph.
Transliteration Qa_lalla_hu ha_za_ yaumu yanfa'us sa_diqina sidquhum, lahum janna_tun tajri min tahtihal anha_ru kha_lidina fiha_ abada_(n), radiyalla_hu'anhum wa radu_ 'anh(u), za_likal fauzul 'azim(u).

Asad God’s is the dominion over the heavens and the earth and all that they contain: and He has the power to will anything.
Yusuf Ali To Allah doth belong the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all that is therein and it is He who hath power over all things.
Pickthall Unto Allah belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth and whatsoever is therein, and He is Able to do all things.
Transliteration Lilla_hi mulkus sama_wa_ti wal ardi wa ma_ fihinn(a), wa huwa 'ala_ kulli syai'in qadir(un).
7. Sura al-Araf
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ لاَ نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلاَّ وُسْعَهَا...
7: 42. But those who believe and work righteousness, no burden do We place on any soul, but that which it can bear,
...أُوْلَـئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ ﴿٤٢﴾
they will be companions of the garden, therein to dwell (for ever).
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهِمُ الأَنْهَارُ...
7: 43. And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury; beneath them will be rivers flowing;
C1021. A man who may have suffered or been disappointed may have a lurking sense of injury it the back of his mind, which may spoil his enjoyment on account of past memory intruding in the midst of felicity. In such cases memory itself is pain. Even sorrow is intensified by memory: as Tennyson says,
"A sorrow's crown of sorrows is remembering happier things."
But that is in this our imperfect life. In the perfect felicity of the righteous, all such feelings will be blotted out. No "heartaches" then and no memories of them! The clouds of the past will have dissolved in glorious light, and no past happiness will be comparable with the perfect happiness which will have then been attained. Nor will any sense of envy or shortcoming be possible in that perfect bliss.
...وَقَالُواْ الْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ الَّذِي هَدَانَا لِهَـذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِيَ لَوْلا أَنْ هَدَانَا اللّهُ...
and they shall say:
"Praise be to Allah, Who hath guided us to this (felicity): never could we have found guidance, had it not been for the guidance of Allah:
...لَقَدْ جَاءتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِالْحَقِّ ...
indeed it was the truth that the Messengers of our Lord brought unto us."
...وَنُودُواْ أَن تِلْكُمُ الْجَنَّةُ أُورِثْتُمُوهَا بِمَا كُنتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ ﴿٤٣﴾
And they shall hear the cry:
"Behold! the garden before you! Ye have been made its inheritors, for your deeds (of righteousness)."
C1022. Jesus said: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth": Matt. 5:5.
Here we are told: blessed are the righteous, for they shall inherit the kingdom of heaven. The stress here is on actual practical deeds of righteousness: whether they find their rewards on earth or not is immaterial: their attention is directed to an infinitely greater reward, the kingdom of heaven.
In the Sermon on the Mount this is promised to the "poor in spirit": Matt. 5:3.

Pickthall And We remove whatever rancor may be in their hearts. Rivers flow beneath them. And they say: The praise to Allah, Who hath guided us to this. We could not truly have been led aright if Allah had not guided us. Verily the messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth. And it is cried unto them: This is the Garden. Ye inherit it for what ye used to do.

9: 20. Those who believe, and suffer exile and strive with might and main, in Allah's cause, with their goods and their persons, have the highest rank in the sight of Allah:
C1270. Here is it good description of Jihad. It may require fighting in Allah's cause, its a form of self-sacrifice. But its essence consists in;
- a true and sincere Faith, which so fixes its gaze on Allah, that all selfish or worldly motives seem paltry and fade away, and
- an earnest and ceaseless activity, involving the sacrifice (if need be) of life, person, or property, in the service of Allah.
Mere brutal fighting is opposed to the whole spirit of Jihad, while the sincere scholar's pen or preacher's voice or wealthy man's contributions may be the most valuable forms of Jihad.
...وَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ ﴿٢٠﴾
They are the people who will achieve (salvation).
يُبَشِّرُهُمْ رَبُّهُم بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنْهُ وَرِضْوَانٍ وَجَنَّاتٍ لَّهُمْ فِيهَا نَعِيمٌ مُّقِيمٌ ﴿٢١﴾
9: 21. Their Lord doth give them Glad tidings of a Mercy from Himself, of His good pleasure, and of gardens for them, wherein are delights that endure.
وَعَدَ اللّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا...
9: 72. Allah hath promised to believers, men and women, gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein,
...وَمَسَاكِنَ طَيِّبَةً فِي جَنَّاتِ عَدْنٍ ...
and beautiful mansions in gardens of everlasting bliss.
...وَرِضْوَانٌ مِّنَ اللّهِ أَكْبَرُ...
But the greatest bliss in the Good Pleasure of Allah:
...ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ﴿٧٢﴾
that is the supreme felicity.

Yusuf Ali Allah hath promised to believers men and women gardens under which rivers flow to dwell therein and beautiful mansions in gardens of everlasting bliss. But the greatest bliss in the Good Pleasure of Allah: that is the supreme felicity.
Pickthall Allah promiseth to the believers, men and women, Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide--blessed dwellings in Gardens of Eden. And greater (far)!--acceptance from Allah. That is the supreme triumph.

10. Surah Yunus
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ يَهْدِيهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِإِيمَانِهِمْ...
10: 9. Those who believe, and work righteousness, their Lord will guide them because of their faith:
C1396. Their Faith is the cause as well as the instrument of their Guidance, -the Kindly Light which leads them as well as the Joy which fills their Soul.
The usual symbols of Gardens and Fire are again contrasted - in each case the result of Good or Evil in Life,
...تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهِمُ الأَنْهَارُ فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ ﴿٩﴾
beneath them will flow rivers in Gardens of Bliss.
دَعْوَاهُمْ فِيهَا سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَتَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهَا سَلاَمٌ...
10: 10. (This will be) their cry therein:
"Glory to Thee, O Allah!"
and
"Peace" will be their greeting therein!
...وَآخِرُ دَعْوَاهُمْ أَنِ الْحَمْدُ لِلّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿١٠﴾
And the close of their cry will be:
"Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds!"
C1397. A beautiful piece of spiritual melody! They sing and shout with joy, but their joy is in the Glory of Allah! The greetings they receive and the greetings they give are of Peace and Harmony!
From first to last they realise that it is Allah Who cherished them and made them grow, and His rays are their Light.
وَاللّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَى دَارِ السَّلاَمِ وَيَهْدِي مَن يَشَاء إِلَى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ ﴿٢٥﴾
10: 25. But Allah doth call to the Home of Peace:
He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight.
C1413. In contrast with the ephemeral and uncertain pleasures of this material life, there is a higher life to which Allah is always calling.
It is called the Home of Peace. For there is no fear, nor disappointment nor sorrow there. And all are called, and those will be chosen who have sought, not material advantages, but the Good Pleasure of Allah.
Salam, Peace, is from the same root as Islam, the Religion of Unity and Harmony.
لِّلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُواْ الْحُسْنَى وَزِيَادَةٌ ...
10: 26. To those who do right is a goodly (reward) -- yea, more (than in measure)!
C1414. The reward of the righteous will be far more than in proportion to their merits. For they will have the supreme bliss of being near to Allah, and "seeing His face". (R).
... وَلاَ يَرْهَقُ وُجُوهَهُمْ قَتَرٌ وَلاَ ذِلَّةٌ...
No darkness nor shame shall cover their faces!
C1415. The face is the symbol of the Personality, the inner and real Self, which is the antithesis of the outer and ephemeral Self.
It will be illuminated with Allah's Light, behind which is no shadow or darkness. All its old shortcomings will be blotted out, with their sense of shame, for there will be Perfection, as in Allah's sight.
...أُوْلَـئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْجَنَّةِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ ﴿٢٦﴾
They are Companions of the Garden;
they will abide therein (for aye)!

beneath which rivers flow --
to dwell therein for aye with the leave of their Lord:
...تَحِيَّتُهُمْ فِيهَا سَلاَمٌ ﴿٢٣﴾
their greeting therein will be: "Peace!"
C1899. How this contrasts with the misery and the mutual self-recriminations of the ungodly!
أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ ضَرَبَ اللّهُ مَثَلاً...
14: 24. Seest thou not how Allah sets forth a parable? --
...كَلِمَةً طَيِّبَةً كَشَجَرةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ أَصْلُهَا ثَابِتٌ وَفَرْعُهَا فِي السَّمَاء ﴿٢٤﴾
a goodly Word like a goodly tree, whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the heavens --
C1900. "Goodly word" is usually interpreted as the Divine Word, the Divine Message, the True Religion.
It may also be interpreted in a more general sense as a word of truth, a word of goodness or kindness, which follows from a true appreciation of Religion. For Religion includes our duty to Allah and our duty to man.
The "evil word" is opposite to this: false religion, blasphemy, false speech, or preaching or teaching unkindness and wrong-doing. (R).

Yuksel Admission was given to those who acknowledged and did good works to gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. In them they will abide by the leave of their Lord. Their greeting therein is "Peace."

15. Surah Al Hijr
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُونٍ ﴿٤٥﴾
15: 45. The righteous (will be) amid Gardens and fountains (of clear-flowing water).
ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلاَمٍ آمِنِينَ ﴿٤٦﴾
15: 46. (Their greeting will be): "Enter ye here in Peace and Security."
وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ...
15: 47. And We shall remove from their hearts any lurking sense of injury:
The hearts and minds will be so purified that all past rancour, jealousy, or sense of injury will be obliterated. The true Brotherhood will be realized there, when each will have his own dignity, there will be no question of invidious comparisons; each will face the others with joy and confidence. There will be no sense of toil or fatigue, and the joy will last forever.
...إِخْوَانًا عَلَى سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَابِلِينَ ﴿٤٧﴾
(they will be) brothers (joyfully) facing each other on thrones (of dignity).
لاَ يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ...
15: 48. There no sense of fatigue shall touch them,
...وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَ ﴿٤٨﴾
nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave.

Yusuf Ali There no sense of fatigue shall touch them nor shall they (ever) be asked to leave.
Pickthall Toil cometh not unto them there, nor will they be expelled from thence.

22. Sura al-Hajj
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
يَدْعُو لَمَن ضَرُّهُ أَقْرَبُ مِن نَّفْعِهِ...
22: 13. (Perhaps) they call on one whose hurt is nearer than his profit:
C2784. Such false worship is not always neutral, bringing neither harm nor good.
Perhaps the harm comes first, and there is no help from Allah. Such minds are themselves demoralised, and render themselves unfit for help!
...لَبِئْسَ الْمَوْلَى وَلَبِئْسَ الْعَشِيرُ ﴿١٣﴾
evil, indeed, is the patron, and evil the companion (for help)!
إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُدْخِلُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الْأَنْهَارُ...
22: 23. Allah will admit those who believe and work righteous deeds, to Gardens beneath which rivers flow:
C2795. In 22:14 above, was described the meed of the Righteous as compared with the time-servers and those who worshipped false gods (Verses. 10-13):
here we have the case of those who were Persecuted, abused, prevented from entering the Ka'bah and deprived of all that makes life smooth, agreeable, and comfortable. For them the meed is described in a way that negative these afflictions:
- costly adornments (as against being stripped of home and property),
- purity of speech (as against the abuse they received),
- the Path of the Lord of Praise (as against the fierce and malignant persecution to which they were subjected).

they shall be adorned therein with bracelets of gold and pearls;
...وَلِبَاسُهُمْ فِيهَا حَرِيرٌ ﴿٢٣﴾
and their garments there will be of silk.
