45. Surah Al-Jathiyah
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
45: 27. To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and the Day that the Hour of Judgment is established --
that Day will the dealers in Falsehood perish!
C4765. These vain wranglers about the future life and deniers of the Truth may have a run in this fleeting world; but the moment the world of Reality is established, they will see what they now deny.
The facts will destroy their fancies, and they themselves will find themselves humiliated and lost, for having deliberately ignored Allah's Signs and acted on opposition to His holy Will.
45: 28. And thou wilt see every sect bowing the knee:
C4766. Bowing the knee: the key-phrase of the Surah, and its title. Cf. 19:72.
Whatever the arrogance of the wicked may be in this life, whatever exclusive sects and divisions they may form, in this life, the time will come when they will humbly submit and bow the knee to the Truth. Before Allah, when their Record is produced, they must necessarily be dumb.
every sect will be called to its Record:
"This Day shall ye be recompensed for all that ye did!
45: 29. "This Our Record speaks about you with truth:
for We were wont to put on record all that ye did."
C4767. Cf. 43:80.
Nothing misses the Recording Angel, and whatever is said in the Record is true.
45: 30. Then, as to those who believed and did righteous deeds, their Lord will admit them to His Mercy:
that will be the Achievement for all to see.
C4768. The attainment and satisfaction of all hopes and desires; the reaching of the final goal of Bliss.
45: 31. But as to those who reject Allah, (to them will be said):
"Were not Our Signs rehearsed to you?
But ye were arrogant, and were a people given to sin!
45: 32. "And when it was said that the promise of Allah was true, and that the Hour -- there was no doubt about its (coming),
ye used to say, We know not what is the Hour:
C4769. There is arrogance as well as untruth in this pretence. The coming of Judgment has been proclaimed times out of number by every prophet of Allah. They cannot dismiss it as a mere idea or superstition. Their object is merely an ostentatious and lofty rejection of Faith.
we only think it is an idea, and we have no firm assurance.'"
45: 33. Then will appear to them the evil (fruits) of what they did, and they will be completely encircled by that which they used to mock at!
C4770. Cf. 11:8.
Their mockery will be turned against themselves, for they will be hemmed in by the very Realities which they had ignored or doubted or laughed at.
45: 34. It will also be said:
"This Day We will forget you as ye forgot the meeting of this Day of yours!
"Forget" is of course metaphorical for "deliberately to ignore".
And your abode is the Fire,
and no helpers have ye!
45: 35. "This, because ye used to take the Signs of Allah in jest, and the life of the world deceived you."
C4772. It is implied that 'you deliberately allowed yourselves to be deceived by the vanities of this world', or 'that you put yourselves into a position where you were deceived, for you were expressly warned against Evil.'
(From) the Day, therefore, they shall not be taken out thence, nor shall they be received into Grace
Asad’s Version:
(45:27) For, God's is the dominion over the heavens and the earth; and on the Day when the Last Hour dawns - on that Day will be lost all who [in their lifetime] tried to reduce to nothing [whatever they could not understand]. 29 '
[[Asad’s note - 29 I.e., whatever they could not "prove" by direct observation or calculation. For the above rendering of al-mubtilun, see surah 29, note 47.]]
45:28 And [on that Day] thou wilt see all people kneeling down [in humility]: all people will be called upon to [face] their record: "Today you shall be requited for all that you ever did!
(45:29) This Our record speaks of you in all truth: for, verily, We have caused to be recorded all that you ever did! "
45:30 Now as for those who have attained to faith and done righteous deeds, their Sustainer will admit them to His grace: that, that will be [their] manifest triumph!
(45:31) But as for those who were bent on denying the truth, [they will be told:] "Were not My messages conveyed to you? And withal, you gloried in your arrogance, and so you became people lost in sin:
(45:32) for when it was said, 'Behold, God's promise always comes true, and there can be no doubt about [the coming of] the Last Hour' - you would answer, 'We do not know what that Last Hour may be: we think it is no more than an empty guess, and [so] we are by no means convinced!'"
45:33 And [on that Day,] the evil of their doings will become obvious to them, and they will be overwhelmed by the very thing which they were wont to deride. 30
45:34 And [the word] will be spoken: "Today We shall be oblivious of you as you were oblivious of the coming of this your Day [of Judgment]; and so your goal is the fire, and you shall have none to succour you:
(45:35) this, because you made God's messages the target of your mockery, having allowed the life of this world to beguile you!"" On that Day, therefore, they will not be brought out of the fire, 32 nor will they be allowed to make amends.
.
46 . Surah Al-Ahqaf
The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:
46: 19. And to all are (assigned) degrees according to the deeds which they (have done), and in order that (Allah) may recompense their deeds, and no injustice be done to them.
C4795. There is fine grading in the Hereafter. Every deed, good or bad, is judged and weighed to the minutest degree, with its motives, intentions, results, and relevant circumstances.
It is not a mere rough classification. The fruits of evil will be exactly according to the degree of evil. But, as stated in other passages (e.g., 28:84), the reward of good deeds will be far beyond their merits, on account of the Mercy and unbounded Bounty of Allah.
46: 20. And on the Day that the Unbelievers will be placed before the Fire,
(it will be said to them):
"Ye received your good things in the life of the world, and ye took your pleasure out of them:
C4796. "Received your good things" implies (in Arabic) grabbing at them, being greedy of them, seeking them as fleeting pleasures rather than the more serious things of life, sacrificing the spiritual for the material.
but today shall ye be recompensed with a Penalty of humiliation:
C4797. They will be told: 'You took your choice, and you must pay the price, You did wrong in a rebellious spirit, and prided yourselves on your wrong-doing, not occasionally, but of set purpose and constantly. Now you will be humbled in the dust, as a fitting punishment.'
for that ye were arrogant on earth without just cause, and that ye (ever) transgressed."
Asad’s Version:
(46:19) for, [in the life to come,] all shall have their degrees in accordance with whatever [good or evil] they did: and so, 25 He will repay them in full for their
doings, and none shall be wronged.
(46:20) And on the Day when those who were bent on denying the truth will be brought within sight of the fire, [they will be told:] "You have exhausted your [share of] good things in your worldly life, having enjoyed them [without any thought of the hereafter]: and so today you shall be requited with the suffering of humiliation
for having gloried on earth in your arrogance, 24 offending against all that is right, and for ill your iniquitous doings!"
"
57. Surah Al-Hadid
57: 19. And those who believe in Allah and His messengers -- they are the Sincere (Lovers of truth),
The four categories there mentioned as constituting the beautiful Company of Faith are:
the Prophets who teach, the Sincere Lovers of Truth,
the Martyrs, and
the Righteous who do good.
Of these, the prophets or messengers have already been mentioned in this verse. The Righteous who do good are mentioned as the men and women given over to deeds of charity in verse 18.
and the witnesses (who testify),
C5300.
The Witnesses are not only Martyrs, but all those who carry the Banner of Truth against all odds and in all positions of danger, whether by pen or speech, or deed or counsel.
in the eyes of their Lord: they shall have their Reward and their Light,
C5301. Note that these two are specially high degrees in the Hereafter, just short of Prophethood. For they have not only their reward in the Hereafter, like those who practice charity (verse 18 above), but they themselves become sources of light and leading.
but those who reject Allah and deny Our Signs -- they are the Companions of Hell-Fire.
Asad’s version
(57:19) For, they who have attained to faith in God and His Apostle - it is they, they who uphold the truth, and they who bear witness thereto] before God: 28 [and so] they shall have their reward and their light!
But as for those who are bent on denying the truth and on giving the lie to Our messages - it is they who are destined for the blazing fire !
