3. Sura al-Imran

Medina 89 [200 verses]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

فِيهِ آيَاتٌ بَيِّـنَاتٌ مَّقَامُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ...

3: 97. In it are signs manifest; (for example), the Station of Abraham;

... وَمَن دَخَلَهُ كَانَ آمِنًا...

whoever enters it attains security;

...وَلِلّهِ عَلَى النَّاسِ حِجُّ الْبَيْتِ مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلاً ...

pilgrimage thereto is a duty men owe to Allah, those who can afford the journey;

وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ الله غَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ ﴿٩٧﴾

but if any deny faith, Allah stands not in need of any of his creatures.

Pickthall’s Version:

3: 97

Pickthall Wherein are plain memorials (of Allah's guidance); the place where Abraham stood up to pray; and whosoever entereth it is safe. And pilgrimage to the House is a duty unto Allah for mankind, for him who can find a way thither. As for him who disbelieveth, (let him know that) Lo! Allah is Independent of (all) creatures.

Transliteration Fihi a_ya_tum bayyina_tum maqa_mu ibra_him(a), wa man dakhalahu_ ka_na a_mina_(n), wa lilla_hi 'alan na_si hijjul baiti manistata_'a ilaihi sabila_(n), wa man kafara fa innalla_ha ganiyyun 'anil 'a_lamin(a).

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:

وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَغْنَى وَأَقْنَى ﴿٤٨﴾

53: 48.  That it is He Who giveth wealth and satisfaction;

• Wealth and material gain are sought by most men, in the hope that they will be a source of enjoyment and satisfaction. But this hope is not always fulfilled. There is a physical and spiritual side to it. But both the material and the spiritual side depend upon the working of Allah's Plan.

This is referred to in the ninth aphorism.

وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ رَبُّ الشِّعْرَى ﴿٤٩﴾

53: 49.  That He is the Lord of Sirius (the Mighty Star);

C5119. The tenth aphorism

• refers to a mighty phenomenon of nature, the magnificent star Sirius, which is such a prominent object in the skies, in the early part of the solar year, say, from January to April. It is the brightest star in the firmament, and its bluish light causes wonder and terror in Pagan minds. The Pagan Arabs worshipped it as a divinity. But Allah is the Lord, Creator and Cherisher, of the most magnificent part of Creation, and worship is due to Him alone.

(53:48) and that it is He alone who frees from want and causes to possess;

(53:49) and that it is He alone who sustains the brightest star; 38
