Both Lives Compared

9: 38 O you who have attained to faith! What is amiss with you that, when you are called upon, “Go forth to war in God’s cause,” you cling heavily to the earth? Would you contend yourselves with [the comfort of ] this worldly life in preference to [the good of] the life to come? But the enjoyment of life in this world is but a paltry thing when compared with the life to come!

9: 39 If you do not go forth to war He will chastise you with grievous chastisement, and will place another people in your stead – whereas you shall in no wise harm Him: for, God has the power to will anything.

13: 26 [ar-R’ad, Medina 96]

Yusuf Ali Allah doth enlarge or grant by (strict) measure the Sustenance (which He giveth) to whom so He pleaseth. (The worldly) rejoice in the life of this world: but the life of this world is but little comfort in the Hereafter.

Pickthall Allah enlargeth livelihood for whom He will, and straiteneth (it for whom He will); and they rejoice in the life of the world, whereas the life of the world is but brief comfort as compared with the Hereafter.

Yuksel God extends the provisions for whom He wishes, or restricts. They celebrated the worldly life, but the worldly life compared to the Hereafter was nothing but a brief enjoyment.

17: 52 [al-Israa, Mecca 50]

Yusuf Ali "It will be on a Day when He will call you and ye will answer (His call) with (words of) His praise and ye will think that ye tarried but a little while!"

Pickthall A day when He will call you and ye will answer with His praise, and ye will think that ye have tarried but a little while.

Yuksel 17:52 The day He calls you and you respond by His grace, and you think that you only stayed a little while.

The Twenty-Ninth Surah

Al-'Ankabut (The Spider)

Period Uncertain

(29:64) for, [if they did, they would know that] the life of this world is nothing but a passing delight and a play - whereas, behold, the life in the hereafter is indeed the only [true] life: if they but knew this!

وَمَا هَذِهِ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَلَعِبٌ...

29:64. What is the life of this world but amusement and play?

C3497. Cf. 6:32.

Amusement and play have no lasting significance except as preparing us for the serious work of life. So this life is but an interlude, a preparation for the real Life, which is in the Hereafter.

This world's vanities are therefore to be taken for what they are worth; but they are not to be allowed to deflect our minds from the requirements of the inner life that really matters.

...وَإِنَّ الدَّارَ الْآخِرَةَ لَهِيَ الْحَيَوَانُ... ...

But verily the Home in the Hereafter, that is life indeed,

...لَوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ ﴿٦٤﴾

if they but knew.
