The Quranic text and Ali’s version


وَلَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا...

23:62 [Ali]. On no soul do We place a burden greater than it can bear:

C2913. Cf. 2:286 and n. 339 .

...وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَابٌ يَنطِقُ بِالْحَقِّ...

before Us is a record which clearly shows the truth:

C2914. The record speaks clearly, and shows exactly what each soul has done and thought, and what is due to it in justice.

The worst will receive full justice. The best will receive far more than their due: 28:84.

...وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ ﴿٦٢﴾

they will never be wronged.



Wala nukallifu nafsan illa wusAAaha waladayna kitabun yantiqu bialhaqqi wahum la yuthlamoona

Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning

Muhammad Asad


And [withal.] We do not burden any human being with more than he is well able to bear: for with Us is a record that speaks the truth [about what men do and can do]; and none shall be wronged.

And we task not any soul beyond its scope, and with Us is a Record which speaketh the truth, and they will not be wronged.

23:63


بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِي غَمْرَةٍ مِّنْ هَذَا...

63. But their hearts are in confused ignorance of this;

C2915. This is said of the Unbelievers who rejected Faith and rejoiced in the vanities of this world. In spite of the proclamation of Truth, they are doubtful of the future Life and Judgment.

...وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَالٌ مِن دُونِ ذَلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَامِلُونَ ﴿٦٣﴾

and there are, besides that, deeds of theirs, which they will (continue) to do --

C2916. In addition to their rejection of Faith, they have against them positive deeds of wrong-doing, from which, on account of their contempt of the Light from Allah, they will not desist until they are sharply pulled up for punishment: and then repentance will be too late!



Bal quloobuhum fee ghamratin min hatha walahum aAAmalun min dooni thalika hum laha AAamiloona

Generally Accepted Translations of the Meaning

Muhammad Asad


NAY, [as for those who have torn asunder the unity of faith] - their hearts are lost in ignorance of all this! But apart from that [breach of unity] they have [on their conscience even worse] deeds; and they will [continue to] commit them

Nay, but their hearts are in ignorance of this (Qur'an), and they have other works, besides, which they are doing;

حَتَّى إِذَا أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِم بِالْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْأَرُونَ ﴿٦٤﴾

64. Until, when We seize in Punishment those of them who received the good things of this world, behold, they will groan in supplication!

[[Asad’s notes - 34 This passage obviously connects with the last sentence of verse 56 - "Nay, but they do not perceive [their error] ! " - and, hence, refers to the people spoken of in verse 54 as being "lost in their Ignorance" (fi ghamratihim).


35 Namely, actions and dogmatic assertions which utterly contradict the teachings of the very apostles whom they claim to follow, like ascribing divine qualities to beings other than God, worshipping saints, or rejecting divine revelations which do not accord with their own likes and dislikes or with their customary mode of thinking.


36 See surah 17, note 22. The particular reference, in this context, to people "who [at present] are lost in the pursuit of pleasures" contains an allusion to verse 55 above (see my explanation in note 32, especially the last sentence). The "taking to task though suffering" spoken of here may refer to the Day of Judgment or - as in 17:16 to the inevitable social ruin which, in the long run,wrong beliefs and actions bring with themselves in this world. ]]

4: 86 But when you are greeted with a greeting, answer with an even better greeting, or with the like thereof. Verily, God keeps count indeed of all things.


6: 58 For, with Him are the keys to the things that are beyond the reach of a created being’s perception: none knows them but He. And He knows all that is on land and in the sea: and not a leaf falls but He knows it ; and neither is there a grain in the earth’s deep darkness, nor anything living or dead, but is recorded in [His] clear decree.


7: 7

Asad …….for never have We been absent [from them].

Yusuf Ali And verily We shall recount their whole story with knowledge for We were never absent (at any time or place).

Pickthall Then verily We shall narrate unto them (the event) with knowledge, for verily We were not absent, (when it came to pass).

Transliteration Falanaqussanna 'alaihim bi'ilmiw wa ma_ kunna_ ga_'ibin(a).

7: 8

Yusuf Ali The balance that day will be true (to a nicety): those whose scale (of good) will be heavy will prosper.

Pickthall The weighing on that day is the true (weighing). As for those whose scale is heavy, they are the successful.

Transliteration Wal waznu yauma'izinil haqq(u), faman saqulat mawa_zinuhu_ fa ula_'ika humul muflihu_n(a)

7: 9

Yusuf Ali Those whose scale will be light will find their souls in perdition for that they wrongfully treated our signs.

Pickthall And as for those whose scale is light: those are they who lose their souls because they disbelieved Our revelations.

Transliteration Wa man khaffat mawa_zinhu_ fa ula_'ikal lazina khasiru_ anfusahum bima_ ka_nu_ bi a_ya_tina yazlimu_n(a).



9: 120 It was not fitting for the people of Madinah and the Bedouin Arabs of the neighborhood, to refuse to follow God’s Messenger, nor to prefer their own lives to his: because nothing could they suffer or do, but was recorded to their credit as a deed of righteousness- whether they suffered thirst, or fatigue, or hunger, in the Cause of God, or trod paths to raise the ire of the Unbelievers, or received any injury whatever from an enemy: for God suffer not the reward to be lost of those who do good.


9: 121 Nor could they spend anything –small or great- nor cut across a valley, but the deed is inscribed to their credit; that God may require their deed with the best [possible reward].

9: 120 [at-Tawbah, Medina 113, 9H after Tabuk]

Yusuf Ali It was not fitting for the people of Medina and the bedouin Arabs of the neighborhood to refuse to follow Allah's Apostle nor to prefer their own lives to his: because nothing could they suffer or do but was reckoned to their credit as a deed of righteousness whether they suffered thirst or fatigue or hunger in the cause of Allah or trod paths to raise the ire of the unbelievers or received any injury whatever from an enemy: for Allah suffereth not the reward to be lost of those who do good;

Pickthall It is not for the townsfolk of Al-Madinah and for those around them of the wandering Arabs to stay behind the messenger of Allah and prefer their lives to his life. That is because neither thirst nor toil nor hunger afflicteth them in the way of Allah, nor step they any step that angereth the disbelievers, nor gain they from the enemy a gain, but a good deed is recorded for them therefor. Lo! Allah loseth not the wages of the good.

Transliteration Ma_ ka_na li ahlil madinati wa man haulahum minal a'ra_bi ay yatakhallafu_ 'ar rasu_lilla_hi wa la_ yargabu_ bi anfusihim 'an nafsih(i), za_lika bi annahum la_ yusibuhum zama'uw wa la_ nasabuw wa la_ makhmasatun fi sabililla_hi wa la_ yata'u_na mauti'ay yagizul kuffa_ra wa la_ yana_lu_na min 'aduwwin nailan illa_ kutiba lahum bihi 'amalun sa_lih(un), innalla_ha la_ yudi'u ajral muhsinin(a).

9: 121

Yusuf Ali Nor could they spend anything (for the cause) small or great nor cut across a valley but the deed is inscribed to their credit; that Allah might requite their deed with the best (possible reward).

Pickthall Nor spend they any spending, small or great, nor do they cross a valley, but it is recorded for them, that Allah may repay them the best of what they used to do.

Transliteration Wa la_ yunfiqu_na nafaqatan sagirataw wa la_ kabirataw wa la_ yaqta'a_na wa_diyan illa_ kutiba lahum liyajziyahumulla_hu ahsana ma_ ka_nu_ ya'malu_n(a).

9: 122

Yusuf Ali Nor should the believers all go forth together: if a contingent from every expedition remained behind they could devote themselves to studies in religion and admonish the people when they return to them that thus they (may learn) to guard themselves (against evil).

Pickthall And the believers should not all go out to fight. Of every troop of them, a party only should go forth, that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may beware.

Transliteration Wa ma_ ka_nal mu'minu_na liyanfiru_ ka_ffah(tan), fa lau la_ nafara min kulli firqatim minhum ta_'ifatul liyatafaqqahu_ fid dini wa liyunziru_ qaumahum izu_ raja'u_ ilaihim la'allahum yahzaru_n(a).



17: 13

Yusuf Ali Every man's fate We have fastened on his own neck: on the Day of Judgment We shall bring out for him a scroll which he will see spread open.

Pickthall And every man's augury have We fastened to his own neck, and We shall bring forth for him on the Day of Resurrection a book which he will find wide open.

Transliteration Wa kulla insa_nin alzamna_hu ta_'irahu_ fi 'unuqih(i), wa nukhriju lahu_ yaumal qiya_mati kita_bay yalqa_hu mansyu_ra_(n).


17: 14

Yusuf Ali (It will be said to him:) "Read thine (own) record: sufficient is thy soul this day to make out an account against thee."

Pickthall (And it will be said unto him): Read thy book. Thy soul sufficeth as reckoner against thee this day.

Transliteration Iqra' kita_bak(a), kafa_ bi nafsikal yauma 'alaika hasiba_(n).


18: 49

Asad ………”Oh, woe unto us! What a record is this! It leaves out nothing, be it small or great, but takes everything into account!”

Yusuf Ali And the Book (of Deeds) will be placed (before you); and thou wilt see the sinful in great terror because of what is (recorded) therein; they will say "Ah! woe to us! what a book is this! It leaves out nothing small or great but takes account thereof!" They will find all that they did, placed before them: and not one will thy Lord treat with injustice.

Pickthall And the Book is placed, and thou seest the guilty fearful of that which is therein, and they say: What Kind of a book is this that leaveth not a small thing nor a great thing but hath counted it! And they find all that they did confronting them, and thy Lord wrongeth no one.

Transliteration Wa wudi'al kita_bu fataral mujrimina musyfiqina mimma_ fihi wa yaqu_lu_na ya_ wailatana_ ma_li ha_zal kita_bi la_ yuga_diru sagirataw wa la_ kabiratan illa_ ahsa_ha_, wa wajadu_ ma_ 'amilu_ ha_dira_(n), wa la_ yazlimu rabbuka ahada_(n).




21:94 [al-Anbiyaa, Mecca 73]
