Sura-5 [Al Maida Medina 112]


The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:



قَالَ عِيسَى ابْنُ مَرْيَمَ ...

5:114. Said Jesus the son of Mary:

... اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّنَا أَنزِلْ عَلَيْنَا مَآئِدَةً مِّنَ السَّمَاء...

"O Allah our Lord! send us from heaven a table set (with viands), that there may be for us --

C826. The words of the Prayer seem to suggest the Last Supper.

Cf. also the vision of Peter in "The Acts of the Apostles." 10:9-16.

... تَكُونُ لَنَا عِيداً لِّأَوَّلِنَا وَآخِرِنَا وَآيَةً مِّنكَ...

for the first and the last of us -- a solemn festival and a sign from Thee;

... وَارْزُقْنَا وَأَنتَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ ﴿١١٤﴾

and provide for our sustenance, for Thou art the best Sustainer (of our needs)."

C827. As in Islam, so in Christ's Prayer, sustenance should be taken for both physical and spiritual strength, especially the latter.

"Give us this day our daily bread" seems the rendering of a literalist whose attention was fixed too much on bread.


Asad’s Version:


5: 114

Asad “…………for You are the best of providers!”

Yusuf Ali Said Jesus the son of Mary: "O Allah our Lord! send us from heaven a table set (with viands) that there may be for us for the first and the last of us a solemn festival and a sign from Thee; and provide for our sustenance for Thou art the best Sustainer (of our needs).

Pickthall Jesus, son of Mary, said: O Allah, Lord of us! Send down for us a table spread with food from heaven, that it may be a feast for Us, for the first of us and for the last of us, and a sign from Thee. Give us sustenance, for Thou art the Best of Sustainers.

Transliteration Qa_la 'isabnu maryamalla_humma rabbana_ anzil 'alaina_ ma_'idatam minas sama_'i taku_nu lana_'idal li'awwalina_ wa a_khirina_ wa a_yatam minka warzuqna_ wa anta khairur ra_ziqin(a).


Sura-23 [Al-Muminun mecca 74]


The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:



لَا تَجْأَرُوا الْيَوْمَ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَ ﴿٦٥﴾

23:65. It will be said:

"Groan not in supplication this day; for ye shall certainly not be helped by Us.

قَدْ كَانَتْ آيَاتِي تُتْلَى عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَى أَعْقَابِكُمْ تَنكِصُونَ ﴿٦٦﴾

23:66. "My Signs used to be rehearsed to you, but ye used to turn back on your heels --

مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ ﴿٦٧﴾

23:67. "In arrogance: talking nonsense about the (Qur'án), like one telling fables by night."

C2917. Samir: one who remains awake by night, one who passes the night in talk or in the recital of stories of romances, a favourite amusement of the Days of Ignorance.

أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا الْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَاءهُم مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ آبَاءهُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ ﴿٦٨﴾

23:68. Do they not ponder over the Word (of Allah), or has anything (new) come to them that did not come to their fathers of old?

C2918. If they ponder over the matter, they will find that Allah's Message to humanity is as old as Adam. It is good for all ages. It never grows old, and it is never new.

[But they will be told:] "Cry not in supplication today: for, behold, you shall not be succoured by Us!


(23:66) Time and again 37 were My messages conveyed unto you, but [every time] you

would turn about on your heels

23:68 Have they, then, never tried to understand this word [of God] ? Or has there [now] come to them something that never came to their forefathers of old

23:71 But if the truth 41 were in accord with their own likes and dislikes, the heavens and the earth would surely have fallen into ruin, and all that lives in them [would long ago have perished] ! " Nay, [in this divine writ] We have conveyed unto them all that they ought to bear in mind: 43 and from this their reminder they [heedlessly] turn away!

23:72 Or dost thou [O Muhammad] ask of them any worldly recompense? But [they ought to know that] a recompense from thy Sustainer is best, since He is the best of providers! 44

44 The terms kharj and kharaj which occur in the above verse are more or less synonymous, both of them denoting "recompense". According to Zamakhshari, however, there is a slight difference between these two expressions, kharj being more restricted in its meaning than kharaj : hence, the first has been rendered as "worldly recompense" and the second as "recompense" without any restrictive definition, implying that a recompense from God is unlimited, relating both to this world and the hereafter. ]]

Sura-34 [Saba Mecca 58]


The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:


قُلْ إِنَّ رَبِّي يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاء مِنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَقْدِرُ...

34:39 [Ali] Say: "Verily my Lord enlarges and restricts the Sustenance to such of His servants as He pleases:

... لَهُ وَمَا أَنفَقْتُم مِّن شَيْءٍ فَهُوَ يُخْلِفُهُ ...

and nothing do ye spend in the least (in his cause) but He replaces it:

... وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ ﴿٣٩﴾

for He is the Best of those Who grant Sustenance.


Asad’s version


34:39 Say: "Behold, my Sustainer grants abundant sustenance, or gives it in scant measure, unto whomever He wills of His servants; 48 and whatever it be that you spend on others, He [always] replaces it: 49 for He is the best of providers." [kharur Razikkin]




Sura-62 [Al-Jumu'ah Medina 110]


The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

 

فَإِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلَاةُ فَانتَشِرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوا مِن فَضْلِ اللَّهِ ...

62:10.  And when the Prayer is finished, then may ye disperse through the land, and seek of the Bounty of Allah:

وَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ﴿١٠﴾

and celebrate the Praises of Allah often (and without stint): that ye may prosper.

C5464. Prosperity is not to be measured by wealth or worldly gains. There is a higher prosperity,-the health of the mind and the spirit.

وَإِذَا رَأَوْا تِجَارَةً أَوْ لَهْوًا انفَضُّوا إِلَيْهَا وَتَرَكُوكَ قَائِمًا ...

62:11.  But when they see some bargain or some amusement, they disperse headlong to it, and leave thee standing.

... قُلْ مَا عِندَ اللَّهِ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ اللَّهْوِ وَمِنَ التِّجَارَةِ ...

Say:

"The (blessing) from the Presence of Allah is better than any amusement or bargain!

... وَاللَّهُ خَيْرُ الرَّازِقِينَ ﴿١١﴾

And Allah is the Best to provide (for all needs)."

C5465. Do not be distracted by the craze for amusement or gain. If you lead a righteous and sober life, Allah will provide for you in all senses, better than any provision you can possibly think of.


Asad’s version

62:9 O YOU who have attained to faith! When the call to prayer is sounded on the day of congregation, 10 hasten to the remembrance of God, and leave all worldly commerce: this is for your own good, if you but knew it.


(62:10) And when the prayer is ended, disperse freely on earth 1 1 and seek to obtain [something] of God's bounty; but remember God often, so that you might attain to a happy state!


62:11 Yet [it does happen that] when people 12 become aware of [an occasion for] worldly gain 13 or a passing delight, they rush headlong towards it, and leave thee standing [and preaching]. 14 Say: "That which is with God is far better than all passing delight and all gain! And God is the best of providers!"


[[Asad’s notes - 10 I.e., on Friday, when the congregational prayer at noon is obligatory. Nevertheless, as the sequence shows, Friday is not a day of compulsory rest in Islamic Law.
