6. Sura al-Anam

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:



وَلَوْ شَاء اللّهُ مَا أَشْرَكُواْ...

6: 107. If it had been Allah's Plan, they would not have taken false gods:

C935. Allah's Plan is to use the human will to co-operate in understanding Him and His relations to us. This is the answer to an objector who might say: "If He is All-powered, why does sin or evil exist in the world? Can He not destroy it?"

He can, but His Plan is different, and in any case it is not for a Teacher to force any one to accept the truths which he is inspired to preach and proclaim.

...وَمَا جَعَلْنَاكَ عَلَيْهِمْ حَفِيظًا وَمَا أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِوَكِيلٍ ﴿١٠٧﴾

but We made thee not one to watch over their doings,

nor art thou set over them to dispose of their affairs.

Asad …….hence, We have not made thee their keeper, and neither are you responsible for their conduct.

Yusuf Ali If it had been Allah's Plan they would not have taken false gods: but We made thee not one to watch over their doings nor art thou set over them to dispose of their affairs.

Pickthall Had Allah is willed, they had not been idolatrous. We have not set thee as a keeper over them, nor art thou responsible for them.

Transliteration Wa lau sya_'alla_hu ma_ asyraku_, wa ma_ ja'alna_ka'alaihim hafiza_(n), wa ma_ anta 'alaihim bi wakil(in).

11.Surah Hud

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:



بَقِيَّةُ اللّهِ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ إِن كُنتُم مُّؤْمِنِينَ...   

11: 86.  "That which is left you by Allah is best for you, if ye (but) believed!

C1585. Allah's Law does not require that a man should deprive himself of the things that are necessary for his own well-being and development.

If he follows Allah's Law, what is left him after he renders to others their just dues will be not only enough, but will be the best possible provision for his own physical and spiritual growth. Even the kindness and consideration which Allah's Law inculcates are in the best interests of the man's own soul. But of course the kindness and consideration must be spontaneous. It must flow from the man's own will, and cannot be forced on him by the Prophet who come from Allah to show him the way.

...وَمَا أَنَاْ عَلَيْكُم بِحَفِيظٍ ﴿٨٦﴾

But I am not set over you to keep watch!"

Yusuf Ali "That which is left you by Allah is best for you if ye (but) believed! But I am not set over you to keep watch!"

Pickthall That which Allah leaveth with you is better for you if ye are believers; and I am not a keeper over you.

Transliteration Baqiyyatulla_hi khairul lakum in kuntum mu'minin(a), wa ma_ ana 'alaikum bi hafiz(in).



26. Surah Al Shu'ara'

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:



وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الْأَقْرَبِينَ ﴿٢١٤﴾

26: 214. And admonish thy nearest kinsmen,

وَاخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ﴿٢١٥﴾

26: 215. And lower thy wing to the Believers who follow thee.

C3233. That is, be kind, gentle, and considerate with them, as a high flying bird is when she lowers her wing to her offspring.

فَإِنْ عَصَوْكَ فَقُلْ إِنِّي بَرِيءٌ مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُونَ ﴿٢١٦﴾

26: 216. Then if they disobey thee, say: "I am free (of responsibility) for what ye do!"

C3234. "Disobey thee" implied that they did something wrong, for the holy Prophet commanded what was right and forbade what was wrong.

If, then, any of his flock did wrong the responsibility was not his, for he, like a good shepherd, tried to keep them right.

What was he then to do?

He would continue his teaching. But if any of them went so far wrong as to try to injure their own Teacher, Leader, and Guide, there was nothing for him to fear. His trust was only in Allah, and Allah sees and appraises all men's actions at their true worth.

وَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ ﴿٢١٧﴾

26: 217. And put thy trust on the Exalted in Might, the Merciful --

الَّذِي يَرَاكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ ﴿٢١٨﴾

26: 218. Who seeth thee standing forth (in prayer),

وَتَقَلُّبَكَ فِي السَّاجِدِينَ ﴿٢١٩﴾

26: 219. And thy movements among those who prostrate themselves.

C3235. Literally, the standing and prostration are postures in Muslim prayer: the holy Prophet was equally earnest, sincere, and zealous in prayer for himself and for all his people.

The Prophet's behaviour was exemplary in all the turns of fortune, and however foolish men may cavil, his purity and uprightness are fully known to Allah. (R).

إِنَّهُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ ﴿٢٢٠﴾

26: 220. For it is He Who heareth and knoweth all things.

26:214 And warn (whomever thou canst reach, beginning with] thy kinsfolk,"


(26:215) and spread the wings of thy tenderness over all of the believers who may follow thee;' 4

(26:217) and place thy trust in the Almighty, the Dispenser of Grace,


(26:218) who sees thee when thou standest [alone],' 5
