Sura-15 [Al Hijr mecca 54]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

وَقُلْ إِنِّي أَنَا النَّذِيرُ الْمُبِينُ ﴿٨٩﴾

15:89.  And say: "I am indeed he that warneth openly and without ambiguity" --

C2012. In the ministry of Al-Mustafa there was no mincing of matters, no compromises with evil. Evil was denounced in unambiguous terms.

Mubin implies both openness and clearness, i.e. freedom from ambiguity.

Other versions:

15: 89

Yusuf Ali And say: "I am indeed he that warneth openly and without ambiguity"

Pickthall And say: Lo! I, even I, am a plain warner,

Yuksel Say, "I am a manifest warner."

Transliteration Wa qul inni anan nazirul mubin(u).

Sura-29 [Al-'Ankabut mecca 85 ]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

وَقَالُوا لَوْلَا أُنزِلَ عَلَيْهِ آيَاتٌ مِّن رَّبِّهِ...

29:50. Yet they say: "Why are not Signs sent down to him from his Lord?"

Say:

"The Signs are indeed with Allah: and I am indeed a clear Warner."

C3481. See last note.

In the Quran, as said in verse 49, are Signs which should carry conviction to all honest hearts. And yet the Unbelievers ask for Signs! They mean some special kinds of Signs or Miracles, such as their own foolish minds dictate.

Everything is possible for Allah, but Allah is not going to humor the follies of men or listen to their disingenuous demands. He has sent a Messenger to explain His Signs clearly, and to warn them of the consequences of rejection.

Is it not enough?

Other versions:

29:50 [Asad] And yet they say, "Why have no miraculous signs ever been bestowed upon him from on high by his Sustainer?" Say: "Miracles are in the power of God alone; 49 and as for me - 1 am but a plain warner.

Sura-34 [Saba Mecca 58]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَعِظُكُم بِوَاحِدَةٍ...

34:46 [Ali] Say:

"I do admonish you on one point:

that ye do stand up before Allah -- (it may be) in pairs, or (it may be) singly -- and reflect (within yourselves): [tatafaqqaru – reflect, think, etc.]

C3857. A crowd mentality is not the best for the perception of the final spiritual truths. For these, it is necessary that each soul should commune within itself with earnest sincerity as before Allah: if it requires a Teacher, let it seek out one, or it may be that it wants the strengthening of the inner convictions that dawn on it, by the support of a sympathizer or friend. But careful and heart-felt reflection is necessary to appraise the higher Truths.

your Companion is not possessed:

C3858. Note that in verses 46, 47, 48, 49 and 50, arguments are suggested to the Prophet, by which he can convince any right-thinking man of his sincerity and truth.

Here the argument is that he is not possessed or out of his mind. If he is different from ordinary men, it is because he has to give a warning of a terrible spiritual danger to the men whom he loves but who will not understand his Message.

he is no less than a Warner to you, in face of a terrible Penalty."

Other versions:

34:44 And yet, [O Muhammad,] never have We vouchsafed them any revelations which they could quote, 54 and neither have We sent unto them any warner before thee.

(34:45) Thus, too, gave the lie to the truth [many of] those who lived before them; and although those [earlier people] had not attained to even a tenth of [the evidence of the truth] which We have vouchsafed unto these [late successors of theirs], yet when they gave the lie to My apostles, how awesome was My rejection! 55

34:46 Say: "I counsel you one thing only: Be [everconscious of] standing before God, whether you are in the company of others or alone; 56 and then bethink yourselves [that] there is no madness in [this prophet,] your fellow -man: 57 he is only a warner to you of suffering severe to come."

The Thirty-Fifth Surah

Al-Fatir (The Originator)

Mecca Period 43

35:19 For [thus it is:] the blind and the seeing are not equal;

(35:20) nor are the depths of darkness and the light;

(35:21) nor the [cooling) shade and the scorching heat:

(35:22) and neither are equal the living and the dead [of heart]. Behold, [O Muhammad] God can make hear whomever He wills, whereas thou canst not make hear such as are [dead of heart like the dead] in their graves:

(35:23) thou art nothing but a warner.

35:19 [Ali] . The blind and the seeing are not alike;

C3904. Now we are offered some contrasts between those who obey Allah's Law and are thus citizens of Allah's Kingdom and those who are rebels against Allah's Kingdom and are thus outlaws.

20. Nor are the depths of Darkness and the Light;

21. Nor are the (chilly) shade and the (genial) heat of the sun:

وَمَا يَسْتَوِي الْأَحْيَاء وَلَا الْأَمْوَاتُ...

22. Nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead.

Allah can make any that He wills to hear;

but thou canst not make those to hear who are (buried) in graves.

23. Thou art no other than a warner.

C3906. The function of a Prophet is to preach Allah's Truth, to point out the right Way, to show men the need of repentance, and to warn them against the dangers which they incur by living a life of evil. He cannot compel them to accept the Truth or listen to the Message

Sura- 38 [Sad Mecca 38]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَنَا مُنذِرٌ...

38:65. Say:

"Truly am I a Warner:

no god is there but the One Allah,

Supreme and Irresistible –

46 Al-Ahqaf (The Sand-Dunes)

Mecca Period 66

46:9 Say: "I am not the first of [God's] apostles; 10 and [like all of them] I do not know what will be done with me or with you:" for I am nothing but a plain warner."

Ali’s version

9. Say:

"I am no bringer of new-fangled doctrine among the messengers, nor do I know what will be done with me or with you.

C4782. 'What is there to forge? All prophets have taught the Unity of Allah and our duty to mankind. I bring no new fangled doctrine, but eternal truths that have been known to good men through the ages. It is to reclaim you that I have come, I do not know what will be your fate for all this callousness, nor what you will do to me. But this I know, that I am preaching truth and righteousness as inspired by Allah. My duty is only to proclaim aloud and clearly the Message entrusted to me by Allah. The rest I leave to Allah.'

I follow but that which is revealed to me by inspiration: I am but a Warner open and clear."

Other versions:

38:65 SAY [O Muhammad]: "I am only a wamer; and there is no deity whatever save God, the One, who holds absolute sway over all that exists,

(38:66) the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, the Almighty, the All-Forgiving!"

38:67 Say: "This is a message tremendous: (38:68) [how can] you turn away from it?" (38:69) [Say, O Muhammad:] "No knowledge would I have had of [what passed among] the host on high when they argued [against the creation of man]; 52

(38:70) had it not been revealed unto me [by God] - to no other end than that I might convey [unto you] a plain warning." 53

Yuksel’s version

46:9 Say, "I am no different from the other messengers, nor do I know what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is inspired to me. I am no more than a clear warner"

Sura-51 [Adh-Dhariyat Mecca 67]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

فَفِرُّوا إِلَى اللَّهِ ...

51:50.  Hasten ye then (at once) to Allah:

C5027. If you understand Nature and yourselves aright, you will know that Allah is the Truth, and you will fly at once to Him. This is the teaching which the Prophet of Allah has come to give you, in clear terms and openly to all.

I am from Him a warner to you, clear and open!

51:51.  And make not another an object of worship with Allah:

C5028. Verses 50 and 51, ending with the same clause to emphasize the connection between the two, should be read together. The Prophet's mission was (and is):

The one convinces us of sin and opens the door to the Mercy of Allah; the other cures us of the madness of paying court to idle or worthless objects of desire; for in the worship of Allah, the One True God is included the best service to ourselves and our fellow-creatures.

If fully understood, this sums up the whole duty of man: for it leads us by the right Path to the love of Allah and the love of man and of all creatures.

I am from Him a Warner to you, clear and open!

Asad’s Version:

(51:50) And so, [O Muhammad, say unto them:] "Flee I unto God [from all that is false and evil] ! Verily, I am a plain warner to you from Him!

(51:51) And do not ascribe divinity to aught 35 side by side with God: verily, I am a plain warner to you from Him! "

Sura-67 [Al-Mulk Mecca 77 ]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَى هَذَا الْوَعْدُ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ ﴿٢٥﴾

67:25.  They ask: When will this promise be (fulfilled)? If ye are telling the truth.

C5585. The Unbelievers are skeptical, but they are answered in the next two verses.

67:26.  Say:

"As to the knowledge of the time, it is with Allah alone:

C5586. The Judgment is certain to come. But when it will exactly come, is known to Allah alone. The Prophet's duty is to proclaim that fact openly and clearly. It is not for him to punish or to hasten the punishment of evil.

Cf. 22:47-49.

I am (sent) only to warn plainly in public."

Asad’s version

67:25 But they [only] ask, "When is this promise to be fulfilled? [Answer this, O you who believe in it,] if you are men of truth!"

67:26 Say thou, [O Prophet:] "Knowledge thereof rests with God alone; and I am only a plain warner."
