Sura-2 [Al-Baqara medina 87]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

إِنَّا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ بِالْحَقِّ بَشِيرًا وَنَذِيرًا وَلاَ تُسْأَلُ عَنْ أَصْحَابِ الْجَحِيمِ ﴿١١٩﴾

2:119. Verily, We have sent thee in truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.

But of thee no question shall be asked of Companions of the blazing fire.

Asad’s Version:

2: 119

Asad Verily, We have sent thee [O Prophet] with the truth, as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner: and thou shalt not be held accountable for those who are destined for the blazing fire.

Yusuf Ali Verily We have sent thee in truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner. But of thee no question shall be asked of Companions of the blazing fire.

Pickthall Lo! We have sent thee (O Muhammad) with the truth, a bringer of glad tidings and a warner. And thou wilt not be asked about the owners of hell fire.

Transliteration Inna_ arsalna_ka bil haqqi basyiraw wa nazira_(n), wa la_ tus'alu 'an asha_bil jahim(i).

[ Ruby’s note: I think it implies to the Rejecters of Truth who are extremely arrogant and unreasonable. And this verse do not imply Jews or followers of any specific creed in general [See previous verses] ]

2: 272 It is not for thee (O Prophet) to make people follow the right path, since it is God (alone) who guides who He wills.

3: 20 but if they turn away – behold, THY DUTY IS NO MORE THAN TO DELIVER THE MESSAGE

5: 92 Hence, pay heed unto God, and pay heed unto the Apostle, and be ever on your guard [against evil]; and if you turn away, then know that Our Apostle’s only duty is

a clear delivery of the message [entrusted to him].

6: 104 Means of insight have now come unto you from your Sustainer [through this divine writ]. Whoever, therefore, chooses to see, does so for his own good; and whoever chooses to remain blind, does so to his own hurt. And [say unto the blind of heart]: “I am not your keeper.”

Sura-10 [ Yunus mecca 51]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

وَإِن يَمْسَسْكَ اللّهُ بِضُرٍّ فَلاَ كَاشِفَ لَهُ إِلاَّ هُوَ...

10:107. If Allah do touch thee with hurt, there is none can remove it but He:

if He do design some benefit for thee, there is none can keep back His favor:

He causeth it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleaseth.

And He is the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

C1489. Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. Even when we suffer under trials and tribulations, it is for our good, and no one can remove them except He, when, in His Plan. He sees it to be best for all concerned.

On the other hand, there is no power that can intercept His blessings and favours, and His bounty flows freely when we are worthy, and often when we are not worthy of it.

10:108. Say:

"O ye men!

now Truth hath reached you from your Lord!

Those who receive guidance, do so for the good of their own souls;

those who stray, do so to their own loss:

and I am not (set) over you to arrange your affairs."

C1490. The Furqan, the Criterion between right and wrong, has been sent to us from Allah. If we accept guidance, it is not as if we confer favours on those who bring us guidance. They suffer unselfishly for us, in order that we may be guided for our own good.

On the other hand, if we reject it, it is our own loss. We have a certain amount of free-will, and the responsibility is ours and cannot be shifted to the Prophets sent by Allah.

10:109.Follow thou the inspiration sent unto thee,

and be patient and constant, till Allah doth decide:

for He is the Best to decide

C1491. When, in spite of all the efforts of the Prophets of Allah, people do not accept Truth, and evil seems to flourish for a time, we must wait and be patient, but at the same time we must not give up hope or persevering effort. For thus only can we carry out our part in the Plan of Allah.

Asad’s Version:

10: 107

Yusuf Ali If Allah do touch thee with hurt there is none can remove it but He: if He do design some benefit for thee there is none can keep back His favor: He causeth it to reach whomsoever of His servants He pleaseth. And He is the Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful.

Pickthall If Allah aflicteth thee with some hurt, there is none who can remove it save Him; and if He desireth good for thee, there is none who can repel His bounty. He striketh with it whom He will of His bondmen. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

Yuksel If God afflicts you with any harm, then none can remove it except Him; and if He wanted good for you, then none can turn away His grace. He bestows it to whom He wishes of His servants. He is the Forgiver, the Compassionate.

10: 108

Yusuf Ali Say: "O ye men! now Truth hath reached you from your Lord! Those who receive guidance do so for the good of their own souls; those who stray do so to their own loss: and I am not (set) over you to arrange your affairs."

Pickthall Say: O mankind! Now hath the Truth from your Lord come unto you. So whosoever is guided, is guided only for (the food of) his soul, and whosoever erreth erreth only against it. And I am not a warder over you.

Yuksel Say, "O people, the truth has come to you from your Lord, so whosoever is guided is guided for himself, and whosoever is misguided is misguided against himself. I am not a caretaker over you."

10: 109

Yusuf Ali Follow thou the inspiration sent unto thee and be patient and constant till Allah doth decide: for He is the Best to decide.

Pickthall And (O Muhammad) follow that which is inspired in thee, and forbear until Allah give judgment. And He is the Best of Judges.

Yuksel Therefore, follow what is being inspired to you and be patient until God judges. He is the best of judges.

13: 7

Asad …….[But] you are only a warner; and [in God] all people have a guide. [ see note 17 for different meaning of it ]

Yusuf Ali And the Unbelievers say! "Why is not a Sign sent down to him from his Lord?" But thou art truly a warner and to every people a guide.

Pickthall Those who disbelieve say: If only some portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Thou art a warner only, and for every folk a guide.

13: 40

Asad ……….thy duty is no more than to deliver the message; and the reckoning is Ours.

Yusuf Ali Whether We shall show thee (within thy lifetime) part of what We promised them or take to Ourselves thy soul (before it is all accomplished) thy duty is to (make the Message) reach them: it is Our part to call them to account.

Pickthall Whether We let thee see something of that which We have promised them, or make thee die (before its happening), thine is but conveyance (of the message), Ours the reckoning.

15: 89

Asad And say: “Behold, I am indeed the plain warner !”

Yusuf Ali And say: "I am indeed he that warneth openly and without ambiguity"

Pickthall And say: Lo! I, even I, am a plain warner,

Transliteration Wa qul inni anan nazirul mubin(u).

16: 82

Asad But if they turn away thy only duty is a clear delivery of the message [entrusted to thee].

Yusuf Ali But if they turn away thy duty is only to preach the clear message.

Pickthall Then, if they turn away, thy duty (O Muhammad) is but plain conveyance (of the message).

Transliteration Fa in tawallau fa innama_ 'alaikal bala_gul mubin(u).

Sura -17 [Al-Israa, Mecca 50]

The Quranic Text & Ali’s version:

رَّبُّكُمْ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ...

17:54.  It is your Lord that knoweth you best:

if He please, He granteth you mercy, or if He please, punishment:

C2239. Man should never for a single moment entertain a thought that would imply that he was wiser than Allah. Allah's knowledge is all-embracing. If He grants mercy to some that you consider wicked or punishment to some that you consider righteous, it is your knowledge or your deductions that are at fault, not Allah's righteous Plan.

Even Prophets of Allah are not sent to arrange or dispose of men's affairs, but only to teach Allah's Message. How much less can ordinary men presume to judge other men?

The Mashiyat -Will and Plan of Allah- is above all human wisdom. (R).

We have not sent thee to be a disposer of their affairs for them.

Asad’s Version:

17: 54

Asad Your Sustainer is fully aware of what you are: if He so wills, he will bestow [His] Grace upon you; and if He so wills, He will chastise you. Hence, We have not sent you with the power to determine their fate,

Yusuf Ali It is your Lord that knoweth you best: if He please He granteth you mercy or if He please punishment: We have not sent thee to be a disposer of their affairs for them.

Pickthall Your Lord is best aware of you. If He will, He will have mercy on you, or if He will, He will punish you. We have not sent thee (O Muhammad) as a warden over them.

Yuksel Your Lord is fully aware of you, if He wishes He will have mercy on you, or if He wishes He will punish you. We have not sent you as a guardian over them.

Transliteration Rabbukum a'lamu bikum, iy yasya' yarhamkum au iy yasya' yu'azzibkum, wa ma_ arsalna_ka 'alaihim wakila_(n).

[see Asad note 62: For many rendering of the term “wakil”, in this context, as “one who has the power to determine the fate [of another being]”, see note 4 on verse 2 of this surah. And alternative, equally acceptable rendering of the above phrase would be, “We have not sent you charged with responsibility for their conduct.”]
