10. Surah Yunus, Mecca 51

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:



وَاتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَى إِلَيْكَ وَاصْبِرْ حَتَّىَ يَحْكُمَ اللّهُ...   

10: 109.Follow thou the inspiration sent unto thee,

and be patient and constant, till Allah doth decide:

...وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الْحَاكِمِينَ ﴿١٠٩﴾  

for He is the Best to decide

C1491. When, in spite of all the efforts of the Prophets of Allah, people do not accept Truth, and evil seems to flourish for a time, we must wait and be patient, but at the same time we must not give up hope or persevering effort. For thus only can we carry out our part in the Plan of Allah.

Pickthall’s Version:

10: 109

Pickthall And (O Muhammad) follow that which is inspired in thee, and forbear until Allah give judgment. And He is the Best of Judges.

Transliteration Wa-ttabi' ma_ yu_ha_ ilaika wa-sbir hatta_ yahkumalla_h(u), wa huwa khairul ha_kimin(a).

7. Sura al-Araf, Mecca 39

The Quranic Text & Ali’s Version:



وَإِن كَانَ طَآئِفَةٌ مِّنكُمْ آمَنُواْ بِالَّذِي أُرْسِلْتُ بِهِ...

7: 87. "And if there is a party among you who believes in the message with which I have been sent,

...وَطَآئِفَةٌ لَّمْ يْؤْمِنُواْ ...

and a party which does not believe,

C1056. Madyan is torn by internal conflict. Shu'ayb comes as a peace-maker, not in virtue of his own wisdom, but by appeal to the truth, righteousness and justice of God.

As we see later, the real motives of his opponents were selfishness, arrogance, violence, lawlessness, and injustice. Bu he appeals to their better nature, and is prepared to argue on the basis that the party which wants to suppress those who believe in God's Message and in righteousness, has some sincere mental difficulty in accepting Shu'ayb's mission.

"If," he says to them, "that is the case, do you think it justifies you intolerance, your violence, or your persecution? On the contrary, events will prove by themselves who is right and who is wrong."

To the small band who believe in his mission and follow his teaching, he would preach patience and perseverance. His argument to them would be:

"You have faith; surely your faith is strong enough to sustain you in the hope that Allah's truth will triumph in the end; there is no cause for despair or dejection."

How exactly these past experiences fit the times of our holy guide Muhammad! And it is for that analogy and that lesson that the stories of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lut, and Shu'ayb are related to us, all different, and yet all pointing to the great lessons in Muhammad's life.

... فَاصْبِرُواْ حَتَّى يَحْكُمَ اللّهُ بَيْنَنَا...

hold yourselves in patience until Allah doth decide between us:

...وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الْحَاكِمِينَ ﴿٨٧﴾

for He is the best to decide."

C1057. See the argument in the last note.

Allah's decision may come partly in this very life, either for the same generation or for succeeding generations, by the logic of external events. But in any case it is bound to come spiritually on a higher plane eventually, when the righteous will be comforted and the sinners will be convinced of sin from their own inner conviction.

Asad “And if there be some among you who have come to believe in the message which I bear, ..........then have patience in adversity till God shall judge between us: for He is the best judges.


Pickthall And if there is a party of you which believeth in that wherewith I have been sent, and there is a party which believeth not, then have patience until Allah judge between us. He is the best of all who deal in judgment.

Transliteration Wa in ka_na ta_'ifatum minkum a_manu_ billazi ursiltu bihi wa ta_'ifatul lam yu'minu_ fasbiru_ hatta_ yahkumalla_hu bainana_, wa huwa khairul ha_kimin(a).

أَفَغَيْرَ اللّهِ أَبْتَغِي حَكَمًا وَهُوَ الَّذِي أَنَزَلَ إِلَيْكُمُ الْكِتَابَ مُفَصَّلاً...

6: 114. Say:

"Shall I seek for judge other than Allah?

when He it is Who hath sent unto you the Book, explained in detail."

C943. The righteous man seeks no other standard of Judgement but Allah's Will. How can he, when Allah in His grace has explained His Will in the Quran, with details which men of every capacity can understand?

The humblest can learn lessons of right conduct in daily life, and the most advanced can find the highest wisdom in its spiritual teaching, enriched as it is with all kinds of beautiful illustrations from nature and the story of man.

...وَالَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ مُنَزَّلٌ مِّن رَّبِّكَ بِالْحَقِّ ...

They know full well, to whom We have given the Book, that it hath been sent down from thy Lord in truth.

...فَلاَ تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُمْتَرِينَ ﴿١١٤﴾

Never be then of those who doubt.

وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَتُ رَبِّكَ صِدْقًا وَعَدْلاً لاَّ مُبَدِّلِ لِكَلِمَاتِهِ...

6: 115. The Word of thy Lord doth find its fulfillment in truth and in justice:

none can change His Words:

...وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ ﴿١١٥﴾

for He is the one who heareth and knoweth all.

وَإِن تُطِعْ أَكْثَرَ مَن فِي الأَرْضِ يُضِلُّوكَ عَن سَبِيلِ اللّهِ...

6: 116. Wert thou to follow the common run of those on earth, they will lead thee away from the Way of Allah.

...إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلاَّ الظَّنَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلاَّ يَخْرُصُونَ ﴿١١٦﴾

They follow nothing but conjecture:

they do nothing but lie.

إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ مَن يَضِلُّ عَن سَبِيلِهِ...

6: 117. Thy Lord knoweth best who strayeth from His Way.

...وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ ﴿١١٧﴾

He knoweth best who they are that receive His guidance.

6: 114

Asad [say you:] “Am I, then to look unto anyone but God for judgment [as to what is right and wrong], when it is He who has bestowed upon you from on high this divine writ, clearly spelling out the truth?” And those unto whom We have vouchsafed revelation aforetime know that this one, too, has been bestowed from on high, step by step, by your Sustainer [note 101]. Be not, then, among the doubters--

Pickthall Shall I seek other than Allah for judge, when He it is who hath revealed unto you (this) Scripture, fully explained? Those unto whom We gave the Scripture (aforetime) know that it is revealed from thy Lord in truth. So be not thou (O Muhammad) of the waverers.

Transliteration Afagairalla_hi abgi hakamaw wa huwal lazi anzala ilaikumul kita_ba mufassala_(n), wallazina a_taina_humul kita_ba ya'lamu_na annahu_ munazzalum mir rabbika bil haqqi fala_ taku_nanna minal mumtarin(a).

6: 115

Pickthall Perfected is the Word of thy Lord in truth and justice. There is naught that can change His words. He is the Hearer, the Knower.

Transliteration Wa tammat kalimatu rabbika sidqaw wa 'adla_(n), la_ mubaddila likalima_tih(i), wa huwas sami'ul 'alim(u).

6: 116

Asad Now if you pay heed unto the majority of those [who live] on earth, they will but lead you astray from the path of God: they follow but [other people’s] conjectures, and they themselves do nothing but guess [note 103].

Pickthall If thou obeyedst most of those on earth they would mislead thee far from Allah's way. They follow naught but an opinion, and they do but guess.

Transliteration Wa in tuti' aksara man fil ardi yudillu_ka 'an sabililla_h(i), iy yattabi'u_na illaz zanna wa in hum illa_ yakhrusu_n(a).

6: 117

Pickthall Lo! thy Lord, He knoweth best who erreth from His way; and He knoweth best (who are) the rightly guided.

Transliteration Inna rabbaka huwa a'lamu may yadillu 'an sabilih(i), wa huwa a'lamu bil muhtadin(a).
