Mary, the mother of Jesus, (pbuh) is a Prophet by definition and is recognized as such. By definition because a Prophet is addressed directly by the angels as Mary (pbuh) was addressed. She is recognized as such because when mentioning her name we follow it by "peace be upon her."

Salam and greetings. I agree with Dr. Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad regarding the issue of prophethood. However, Sr. Ruby's concern is also valid, since the broader community considers prophethood limited to men only. At the same time, we must also inform ourselves and the rest of the community that there are also notable religious scholars who have had divergent view on this. For example, Imam Hazm (Zahiri School) argued that prophethood is not limited to women. His views are presented at http://globalwebpost.com/farooqm/study_res/islam/gender/women_prophethood.html. Fi amanillah.

Thank you Brother Imad-ad-Dean for your comment, I agree with you wholeheartedly, however, I do not know whether most of the Muslim umma will agree with you or not?
